@dkristen

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • What is the exact issue with the touchpad driver?
  • Are you able to use the touchpad?
  • Have you tried downloading and installing the drivers from the HP website?

Note: If its a hardware related issue then the computer needs to be serviced.

Keep me posted!

*** UPDATE 8/30/19 ***

Lost Touchpad functionality again. Reinstalled sp81891.exe (Synaptics TouchPad Driver 19.3.31.31) downloaded from HP. After coming back from hibernation mode next day, SMBus driver had disappeared from Device Manager. Rebooted. This time when I tried to view mouse properties, got a message I'd never seen before saying Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. ... Do you want to uninstall Synaptics driver. I said No. Then the mouse properties hardware list the driver showed as ps/2 compatible pointing device (which i deduced was Microsoft's best generic match for the touchpad driver). Knew that was wrong, so uninstalled it and rebooted. Windows (or God or somebody) auto installed the latest version of Synaptics driver (19.5.10.75). Touchpad is working for the moment.

Conclusion: I have no idea what's going and will keep flailing around until I get so frustrated I'll buy a new laptop.

No need to read the rest of this message if you are looking for a solution. I don't have one.

I’ve spent hours researching and trying to fix a recurring problem with my laptop Synaptics touchpad / clickpad becoming unresponsive or losing ability to scroll. I’ve found a resolution that works for me and that I haven’t seen posted anywhere else, so I’m posting it here in case it can help other people. Let me know if I should share this somewhere else.

Here are my PC specs:

HP Spectre x360 - 15-ap012dx (ENERGY STAR)

Windows 10 Home

Windows Update enabled

Description of problem:

A few weeks ago, my touchpad became unresponsive. I checked my app installations by date and found that a Synaptics update had been installed by Windows Update. So I uninstalled it to see what would happen. This takes you back to the generic Windows driver, which restores basic touchpad functionality, but not two-finger scrolling, which is a must for me.

So I then went to the HP Support page for my laptop and checked the recommended touchpad drivers. There were two: a “critical” one and a newer one:

Critical

Synaptics TouchPad Driver

19.3.31.31 Rev.A Aug 25, 2017

Synaptics TouchPad Driver (Windows 10 v1803)

19.5.10.75 Rev.C Nov 9, 2018

I installed the critical one only (19.3.31.31), and that fixed the scrolling problem.

Fast forward to today: Again, touchpad suddenly dead. Checked recently installed apps, and discovered that the Synaptics driver had been updated by Windows Update again, but didn’t notice that it was updated to the NONCRITICAL driver. So Windows Update was doing the right thing, except the newer Synaptics driver broke the touchpad. (Nice job, Synaptics! BTW why does your nonfunctioning driver software need 91 MB??)

This time I thought, well, I better do both the critical and the noncritical update. That, of course, didn’t work.

Finally, I realized that I needed to roll back to the critical driver only.

BUT the problem still remained: how to stop Windows Update from reinstalling the newer driver and killing my touchpad?

Apparently the trick is to download and use the Windows Show/Hide Updates utility to “hide” the deadly Synaptics update. Steps here:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-prevent-windows-driver-update

I’ll report back if any of this goes awry. Meanwhile, HP, sure would be nice if you could encourage Synaptics to fix their driver. I can never get back those wasted hours ...

I have the same problem buddy.i have notebook bs179tx.its touchpad and keypad both seems to be dead.sometimes it works, but it had been 2 months when they worked.i am quite frustated.i had written so many mails, but they had not responded.i think the main problem with its bios and button driver(my personal view).U need to synchronise between button driver and touchpaddriver(Due to windows update, they changed somehow). had gone through a lot of research but couldn't solve it.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊
