HP Pavilion Power - 15-cb007nv

Dear HP community

I cannot make my open suse  tumbleweed OS  recognize & use the Nvidia geforce gtx 1050 card, no matter what driver

I install. There are daily updates released, still the switch process between the intel mesa card and the nvidia simply does not work. It seems as the nvidia card just disappeared!

PCI Hardware log follows, any helping hand?

Thanks in advance!

Hello.

If your laptop BIOS has settings for "hybrid" or "discreet" graphics, turn them on.

If you still have Windows installed on your SSD, check that the Nvidia is still visible there. If it is, then this is an issue with your chosen Linux distribution. OpenSUSE has their own forum with way more Linux know-how than what you can find in here, so I recommend asking this same question there as well.

Also, before going all-in with Linux, I recommend checking whether there are BIOS updates for your laptop. Updating the BIOS in Linux may be very hard or impossible.

HP Recommended

Thank you for your reply!

There is no bios setting for selecting graphics nor windows. Maybe due to the thermal shutdown screen, I could not load or setup any windows OS, but only linux. The bios release is the latest.

Within the official HP user guide (Document Part Number: 925501-001) on page 1, of specs, it is mentioned that Optimus is supported:

Internal graphics
Intel HD Graphics 630
Hybrid graphics
Nvidia N17P-G0 (GeForce GTX 1050) with 4096 MB or 2048 GB of dedicated video
memory
AMD R17M-P1-70 (Radeon RX 550) with 2048 MB of dedicated video memory
Support HD Decode, DX12, and HDMI
Supports Optimus

I only wish HP would test which OS or distribution other than windows, is compatible

for such emergency cases!

Hello.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the thermal problem. Perhaps it is related to the missing NVidia GPU?

Please take a look at this Nvidia forum discussion and try the same troubleshooting methods.

If your laptop has "fried" components, who knows how it will operate thereafter. A hardware problem in any case if you can't get rid of the error on screen. (if I understood the problem)

You wrote in another message that you took the computer to a store where they didn't fix it. I would recommend taking your laptop to a proper, authorized HP Service Center near you, and you can find them with the HP Service Center locator. Many, many shops sell HP computers, but very few repair them outside of adding memory or replacing the HDD/SSD. The authorized service centers have access to more HP resources, non-public tools and information, and actually have more incentive to fix your laptop instead of just selling a new one.

Hi,

Firstly the hp uefi & bios system and single components tests were all successful.

Linux operates for weeks well, without taking into account any past thermal measurements, as the bios does.

Secondly, one cannot operate the keyboard after 2 hours of work, because the heat on wrists and hands becomes unbearable. One feels when it is high time for a break!

Thus, frying, boiling, roasting... any hardware component only partly from the whole mobo is highly unprobable.

Moreover, burnt out electronic components smell...

The repair store Plaisio computers claim to be  an authorized service center for HP. Still they claim no spare parts are available from HP.

I understand you. But if the device dies and does not respond to the system in any way, you cannot test it in any way with software. The UEFI diag package is just a piece of software in the end.

I have seen it happen before - the built-in discrete graphics failed completely and laptop only worked with the Intel graphics part just fine. HP replaced the system board.

Your case may be the same, or not.

Secondly, one cannot operate the keyboard after 2 hours of work, because the heat on wrists and hands becomes unbearable. One feels when it is high time for a break

Was this a problem from day one?

Underneath the wrist rest are only the battery and memory modules. High heat levels will affect the battery lifetime negatively. High temperature could be cause by the heat sink having a poor or no contact with the CPU or GPU.

The repair store Plaisio computers claim to be  an authorized service center for HP. Still they claim no spare parts are available from HP.

I can only refer to the HP Service Center locator tool which does not list Plaisio in Athens in any HP category. Only "Westnet" is listed when Consumer Notebook is selected. HP Pavilions are consumer products. The locator tool may have outdated data, of course.

Try the https://partsurfer.hp.com website for parts availability. It may not list your exact product number, but you can cross-check withe the Maintenance and Service Guide for Pavilion Power 15, and most of the parts are still available, including system boards with the GTX1050.

HP has different types of products and very few company has authorized service for every one of them, most service companies do not cater to every one of them. Each category requires (possibly multiple) certified personnel in several different product lines. Certifying takes time and money. Plaisio may be HP certified, but are they certified with laptops, desktops or what?

I would still recommend you asking this "Westnet" company whether they can take a look and fix the problem.

Thank you for all your responses!

Who can tell which of the two video cards was successfully been tested by reading the logs?
