I have an HP Printer 8020 and a HP laptop with 11 on it.  What's the easiest way to scan to my external hard drive whis is connected to my laptop now.  The goal is to upload the file to a portal from the external hard drive.

Hi @CMG-in-FL47

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here’s a clear set of steps you can follow to scan a document from your HP Printer 8020 directly to your external hard drive connected to your Windows 11 laptop:

Step 1: Ensure Connections

  • Confirm your printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi‑Fi network as your laptop.
  • Make sure your external hard drive is properly connected and accessible on your laptop (you should see it listed under “This PC” in File Explorer).

Step 2: Install the HP App on Your Laptop

  • Even though you have the HP App on your phone, you’ll need it on your Windows 11 laptop for direct scanning.
  • Open the Microsoft Store on your laptop, search for “HP App,” and install it.

Step 3: Open the HP App

  • Launch the HP App from your Start menu.
  • Add your HP Printer 8020 if it isn’t already listed. The app will guide you through detection and setup.

Step 4: Start the Scan

  • In the HP App, select your printer.
  • Choose the “Scan” option.
  • Place your document on the scanner glass or in the document feeder.

Step 5: Save to External Hard Drive

  • After scanning, the app will prompt you to save the file.
  • Select “Save As” and navigate to your external hard drive in File Explorer.
  • Choose the folder where you want the file stored and click “Save.”

Step 6: Upload to Your Portal

  • Once the file is saved on your external hard drive, open your portal in a browser.
  • Use the portal’s upload option to browse to your external hard drive and select the scanned file.

This workflow ensures your scanned file is stored directly on the external hard drive, making it easy to upload afterward.
