Example: Pavilion X360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 3 month old X360 won't power up any more and so I took it back to Currys and they said they would send it to HP.

It turns out that they didn't send it to HP and sent it to their own repair centre. They are now saying that I must pay for a repair because of liquid damage.

They say that I need to agree to pay £380 up front but other parts may be needed and so the total cost is unknown.

As I paid £460 for the brand new item I want to understand who is trying to rip me off here. The power lead, screen, windows software and other parts of the X360 are fine and the retailer makes a profit on selling the item, which means that either HP must be ripping me off on the price of replacement parts or Currys are ripping me off.

Any thoughts on what to do next would be appreciated.

I've had 7 HP products so far but this experience is going to put me off for life.

Hi,

If the damage is not covered under warranty, the parts can be very expensive depending on what is replaced.

Some people actually dismantle new computers into parts and sell them for a profit. I would say a motherboard+drive+work is going to cost more than a new PC. This is true for all brands.

If you provide the exact model number of the x360 we can take a look at the prices for parts.

Hope it helps,

David

Thank you for responding.

The model is 14-cd0505sa.

I've been told it needs a motherboard and keyboard and a touchpad was also mentioned but no price given.

I wasn't aware of any liquid damage and so that implies that the contruction of the X360 is not resilient at all, despite the fact that it is sold as something that you use in a variety of ways.

If you are saying that all manufacturers are the same then there is clearly a case for the 'Green Lobby' to take issue with this and so I'll try to publicise this through those channels.

The motherboard alone if bought from official reseller

has a very high cost.

You could try inserting your serial number in HP support page (linked below)

and see contact options under warranty. Ask if you can send directly to HP for evaluation and fix.

Maybe you can also dispute the water damage cause.

What I mean is that all the devices you use, computer, smartphone, car, heating... if bought in parts, will cost much more than the device itself.

Regards,

David
