Is windows defender enough?

Hello, I bought an HP laptop, but they didn't put an antivirus in my windows 10 home. Is the built-in windows defender enough to protect my laptop from viruses and everything? just like other antiviruses? Because people are telling me that the defender is not enough and that it doesn't fully protect.

If you bought a HP laptop new, then it most likely  has an anti-virus software installed but may have expired.  There are many free anti-virus software versions from AVG, Avast, ETC see here

Just an FYI:  Not all anti-virus software is the same and some are better than others, according to testing, but having one installed is better than not having any, IMHO.

Thanks for your reply. Yes my laptop has macafee, but it is expired since 400 smthg days ago. I don't want to loose the defender, that's why I'm asking if it does the full job. If it's very good, I won't install another one. And the problem is, some are saying it's good, and some no. So, from your personal experience, I mean if you have tried the defender, and you use internet a lot, what do you suggest?

I have used Windows Defender before and it is OK.  Did you read the article linked with reviewed Windows Defender?

On most of my PC's  I use a paid Security software package.  If you do only email and internet surfing, then Windows Defender is probably adequate.  If you  bank with the same computer, then not what I would consider safe.

If you visit porn sites - any porn sites- then use a different PC to do anything else, as no anti-virus/internet security softwares are going to protect you 100%.

Tee, what TheOldMan was saying is that Windows' Defender is better than nothing. And he said you would have to decide for yourself. In my experience, nothing out there works 100% of the time. I use AcAfee's premium service and I have still gotten a virus and several times I got MalWare.  

Also in my opinion, Defender is not the best, especially if you surf the Web. Looking at pictures and videos and clicking on unknown Web site are dangerous things to do. You need to decide what level of protection you need, and are willing to pay for.

If you are not willing to pay for one of the Anti-software programs, then stick with Defender and use care when you click on things.
