The machine was running very slowly, so I reformatted it. But I'm having trouble configuring the keyboard—specifically the layout.

The key below the 'ç' is supposed to be '?/', but it outputs ':;' instead.

And when I press the key that should be ':;', nothing happens.

With the '7' key, nothing I do—pressing Shift or Alt Gr—gets the '\' symbol to appear.

With the '8' key, nothing I do—pressing Shift or Alt Gr—gets the '|' symbol to appear.

Hi  @BR41VBD0M0

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your concern  that after reformatting the computer, several keys are producing different characters than what is printed on the keyboard. Based on the photo, this looks like a keyboard layout or language mapping issue, where Windows may be using a different keyboard layout than the physical keyboard installed on the notebook.

To help us better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm  If you have tested with an external USB keyboard, does it behave the same way?

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

  1. Check the keyboard layout in Windows:
    • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region
    • Select your preferred language and click Language Options
    • Under Keyboards, verify that the correct layout for your keyboard is installed
    • Remove any unwanted keyboard layouts and leave only the correct one
  2. Test the keyboard using the Windows On-Screen Keyboard:
    • Press Windows + Ctrl + O
    • Compare the characters shown on the On-Screen Keyboard with those produced by the physical keyboard
  3. Check for HP and Windows updates:
    • Install any pending Windows Updates
    • Run HP Support Assistant and install any recommended updates
