HP 15-bw080nd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi guys,

For some reason my new laptop's CPU usage is at 100% most of the time.

It occurs whenever the laptop is booting up, when I'm opening light applications and also while doing light webbrowsing (even with just 1 tab open)... My laptop has an AMD A9-9420 (with Radeon R5 graphics).

I've also reinstalled Windows 10 already but it didn't make any difference.

Is this laptop supposed to be this slow? If so, I'll return it if possible.

Thanks!

@Giesbeest

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP Notebook - 15-bw080nd and read that the CPU usage is always high. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

Let me know if the laptop overheats.

Let us update the BIOS on your laptop. You may download and run the BIOS update via this link. NOTE: Please have the charger connected to the laptop during the BIOS update to avoid any power interruptions due to battery draining out.

I hope this helps. Let me know what happens. Good luck! 🙂

Sorry, but that didn't work at all. The laptop's cpu usage is still too high.

I'm not sure about overheating, but the fan is on it's highest level most of the time which is also very annoying.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

As you have already tried these steps and still having the issue, I would personally suggest you contact our HP phone support for further assistance. If your product is Out of warranty then remember to choose the paid options to get the tech support number.

They might have multiple options to help you on this.

Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

Keep me posted for any other assistance,

Cheers

Hi Giesbeest,

Can you please elaborate on when your CPU usage is high? Is it at boot? What programs seem to eat up the most CPU? Before contacting HP or, if possible, returning the laptop, we can try to diagnose the issue by searching for corrupt processes. If it happens at boot, we can try to safely disable as many startup programs.

I also recommend to try and boot into Windows Safe Mode which only runs the essential services/drivers. This can be done by holding Shift while selecting Restart. If you find that the CPU usage is fine in Safe Mode and find no lag or discomfort whatsoever in Safe Mode, there may be a corrupt process or a certain application that is causing incompatibility issues in the background.
