Microsoft Windows 11

System Model HP Pavilion Laptop 15-csOS

OS Name Microsoft Windows 11 Home

Version 10.0.22631 Build 22631

My screen goes black, everything including the cursor, when I move the cursor around the screen to certain fields.  It will reappear when the cursor finds a field that it likes.  When I use an extended display, such as wireless to my TV, everything works fine on the TV.  Sometimes if I reboot I don't have the problem.

Hi @AdamH65,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a display issue on your HP Pavilion 15 laptop, which might be related to either the graphics driver, the laptop's display hardware, or a software glitch. Here are a few steps you can try to fix this problem.

Update Graphics Drivers

  • Sometimes, outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues like this.
    • Go to Device Manager (right-click the Start menu and select it).
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click on your graphics driver, and select Update driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and let Windows check for updates.
    • Restart your laptop after updating.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Ensure your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates.
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
    • Install any updates and restart your laptop.

Adjust Display Settings

  • Sometimes adjusting the display settings might help resolve these issues:
    • Right-click on your desktop and select Display settings.
    • Try adjusting the resolution or scaling settings and check if the issue persists.

Perform a Clean Boot

  • A clean boot helps you identify if a background process or application is causing the issue.
    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
    • In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
    • In the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager and disable all startup items.
    • Restart your computer and see if the issue persists. If it doesn't, gradually re-enable services and startup items to pinpoint the cause.

Test in Safe Mode

  • If the issue doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it may be related to a software conflict.
    • To boot into Safe Mode, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup.
    • After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    • Once your PC restarts, select 4) Safe Mode and see if the issue persists.

Check Hardware Connections

  • Since you mentioned the issue doesn't appear when using an external display, the problem might be specific to your laptop's internal display. In this case:
    • Check if the display cable inside the laptop is loose or damaged (this might require disassembly, so it’s best to consult a professional if you're unsure).
    • You could also test the laptop on another monitor using an HDMI cable to confirm whether the issue is specific to the laptop screen.

Check for Overheating

  • Sometimes, overheating can cause display issues. Make sure your laptop isn’t overheating, as this can sometimes lead to graphical glitches or screen failures.

Reset BIOS Defaults

  • Resetting the BIOS to default settings might resolve any potential conflicts:
    • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter the BIOS.
    • Once inside, navigate to Restore Defaults and save the changes.
    • Exit and restart your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
