I’ve had my laptop for like 2 months. On 3 occasions now, I haven’t been able to wake my laptop. On 2 occasions, it suddenly went into sleep mode while I was in a Google meet, and I could not get it to wake back up from pressing any buttons plugging in the computer, etc. On both of these occasions it just randomly started working like 5 to 10 minutes later. It just woke back up — it’s not like it shut down or restarted. On the third occasion it was asleep, but I wasn’t able to wake it up for 5 minutes or so. Thx for any help!!!

Hi @gopalko3

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining that so clearly—it’s genuinely frustrating when a laptop seems to fall asleep mid-task and refuses to wake up, especially during something important like a Google Meet.

Since this has happened multiple times and the system eventually wakes without restarting, it points to a power management or sleep state conflict, possibly tied to Modern Standby, driver behavior, or firmware settings.

Let’s walk through a structured fix to help stabilize wake behavior and prevent these random sleep episodes.

Step-by-Step Recovery and Prevention

1. Adjust Sleep and Lid Settings

Misconfigured power plans can cause unexpected sleep triggers.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings
  • Click Change advanced power settings
  • Under Sleep, set:
    • Sleep after: 30 minutes or more
    • Hibernate after: Never
  • Under Power buttons and lid, set:
    • Lid close action: Do nothing (especially during meetings)
    • Sleep button action: Sleep
    • Power button action: Shut down

2. Update Graphics and Chipset Drivers

Outdated or unstable drivers can interfere with wake behavior.

  • Visit the HP Driver Page for your model
  • Download and install the latest:
    • Intel/NVIDIA graphics drivers
    • Intel Management Engine Interface
    • Chipset drivers
    • BIOS (if newer version available)

3. Allow Devices to Wake the Laptop

Ensure your keyboard and mouse are permitted to wake the system.

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices
  • Right-click each device > Properties > Power Management
  • Check Allow this device to wake the computer

4. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics

This confirms hardware health and rules out embedded controller faults.

  • Power off the laptop
  • Press Esc repeatedly during startup, then select F2
  • Run Extensive Test on system board and memory
  • Reference: HP UEFI Diagnostics Guide

Let’s get your laptop back to reliable, responsive performance.
