Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

The product is quite old but its intel gpu has the latest graphic driver whereas the AMD Radeon has still the old graphics driver because hp has not launch its new and updated driver for the users. Windows update is also not updating the driver upon looking its compatibility with the device's harddrive. Why hp has not launched its updated software of switchable graphics till now.

Hi @mahidden,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're facing a common issue with older hardware, especially in laptops that use switchable graphics technology, such as those from HP with both Intel and AMD Radeon GPUs. There are a few reasons why HP might not update drivers for older devices:

Product Lifecycle:  Once a product reaches the end of its official support lifecycle, updates become less frequent or stop altogether. This includes driver updates for components like GPUs.

Compatibility and Stability: Updating drivers for older hardware requires ensuring that the new drivers are fully compatible with the existing hardware and do not introduce stability issues. Sometimes, newer drivers are optimized for newer hardware and might not work as well or offer any benefits to older devices. This can lead manufacturers to decide against releasing new drivers for older models.

Resource Allocation: Developing, testing, and supporting new drivers requires significant resources.

Operating System Updates: Sometimes, the compatibility issue isn't just with the device's hardware but also with newer versions of operating systems. If the OS has been significantly updated since the device was released, it might not be feasible or possible to update the drivers to work with the new OS version without significant rework.

Third-party Components: In the case of switchable graphics, the laptop relies on technology and drivers from both Intel and AMD. Coordination between these companies is required to ensure smooth operation, and sometimes updates for one component might not be fully compatible with the other, leading to delays or the absence of updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your response to an old customer, upon looking at your explanation ,should we assume that it is not better to  download the latest drivers for the same hardware from the authentic source like hardware manufacturers website like Amd  in case if someone would not find the latest driver software in the hp site because the driver for switchable there is of 2015 and now window has upgraded to windows 10 and 11 . So if we are not using the old windows platform then obviously we require the updated software of that graphic device. Now I would conclude by asking , is it fine to download the driver from the amd website?

Thanks Again,

Hi @mahidden,

We would always recommend you to try in Hp website first.

Sometimes, If you don't get the driver you may check the AMD or Nvidia website for the drivers, Please make sure you select the correct model and details.

A wrong driver can mess up the system.

I hope this answers your question.
