Hi @griffin429,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing a rather unusual issue with your Caps Lock key. Given the specifics, this could be related to either hardware or software problems. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the issue:

1. Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Clean the Keyboard: Sometimes, dirt or debris can cause keys to malfunction. Gently clean around the Caps Lock key and other affected keys.
  • External Keyboard Test: If you have an external keyboard, connect it to your laptop and see if the Caps Lock key works correctly. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop's keyboard or not.

2. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:

  • Update Drivers: Go to Device Manager > Keyboards > Right-click your keyboard and select Update driver. Follow the prompts to see if there are any updates available.
  • Reinstall Drivers: If updating doesn't help, try uninstalling the keyboard driver. Right-click your keyboard in Device Manager, choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

3. Check Keyboard Settings:

  • Language Settings: Ensure your keyboard language and layout settings are correct. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language and check if your keyboard layout matches your physical keyboard.
  • Accessibility Settings: Sometimes, accessibility features like Sticky Keys or Filter Keys can interfere with normal keyboard behavior. Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and ensure these features are turned off.

4. Run Hardware Diagnostics: HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

  • HP Support Assistant: Use the HP Support Assistant tool to run a hardware diagnostic test. It can help identify if there are any hardware issues with your keyboard.

5. Perform a System Scan:

  • Malware Scan: Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to ensure that malware isn’t causing the issue.

6. BIOS Update/Reset:

  • Update BIOS: Sometimes, a BIOS update can fix hardware issues. Check HP’s website for a BIOS update for your model.
  • Reset BIOS: You can reset your BIOS to default settings. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10 or ESC during startup), then select the option to restore defaults.

7. Consider Keyboard Replacement:

  • If none of the above solutions work, it might be a hardware issue with the keyboard itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
