hp envy x360 convertible 13 ay0xxx
Microsoft Windows 11

I attempted to do a clean install of Windows 11 on my 'HP Envy x360 Convertible 13-ay0xxx' using the latest ISO downloaded from Microsoft. The installer stop at a "Install driver to show hardware" screen with no indication of what kind of driver is needed.

How do I proceed?

Hi @VJP3007,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must feel to be all set for a fresh start with your HP Envy x360 Convertible 13-ay0xxx, only to be halted by a vague “Install driver to show hardware” message. Let’s walk through this together. You’re not alone in this.

This issue typically occurs during a clean install of Windows 11 on systems with 11th Gen AMD or Intel processors. The Windows installer doesn’t include the necessary storage controller drivers (like Intel Rapid Storage Technology or AMD RAID drivers), so it can’t detect your SSD or hard drive.

Here's How to Fix It Step by Step

Step 1: Download the Required Storage Driver

  1. Visit the official HP driver page for your model:
    👉 HP ENVY x360 Convert 13-ay0xxx (6M9E5U8) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  2. Under “Driver-Storage”, download the AMD RAID or Intel RST driver (depending on your processor).
  3. Do not install the driver on your current system. Instead, right-click the downloaded .exe file and choose “Extract All…” to a folder.

Step 2: Prepare Your USB Drive

  1. Copy the extracted driver folder to the same USB drive that contains your Windows 11 installation media.
  2. Plug this USB into your HP Envy x360.

Step 3: Load the Driver During Installation

  1. Boot your laptop from the USB and start the Windows 11 installation.
  2. When you see the “Install driver to show hardware” screen, click “Browse”.
  3. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the driver.
  4. Select the appropriate .inf file and click Next.
  5. Your drive should now appear, and you can proceed with the installation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @VikramTheGreat

Thank you for the response. However, the link you provided does not have any AMD RAID drivers. Only Realtek Card Reader driver are available under 'Driver-Storage'.

Hi @VJP3007,

Thank you for getting back to us. We truly appreciate you taking the time to check the link.

We’ve reviewed the support page as well, and you are correct at this time; there are no AMD RAID drivers available for your specific model on HP’s official support site. The only driver listed under “Driver – Storage” is the Realtek Card Reader.

This simply means that your HP system was not configured or validated by HP with an AMD RAID controller, and therefore, RAID drivers are not provided for it. If your unit uses a standard AHCI storage configuration (which most consumer systems do), Windows will automatically handle the storage driver through its built-in support or through AMD’s general chipset package.

If you are attempting to set up a custom RAID array or reinstall Windows, you can try downloading the latest AMD RAID or chipset drivers directly from AMD’s official website that correspond to your processor/chipset model. However, please note that HP can only guarantee full compatibility with the drivers listed on your HP Support page.

Take care and have a good day.

Windows 11 clearly works on this laptop since it's running an instance at this time. I want to do a clean install which needs a driver for a piece of hardware on said HP laptop, and HP themselves do not provide a driver or any specifics that would allow me to identify the component and source the correct driver from the OEM.

Please make it make sense.

Hi @VJP3007,

We understand your desire to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 on your HP laptop. While Windows 11 may currently be running, performing a clean install using a generic ISO from Microsoft can lead to driver compatibility issues, especially for proprietary components such as fingerprint readers, touchpads, or audio subsystems that require HP-specific OEM drivers.

Why Generic ISO May Cause Issues:

Microsoft’s ISO does not include all the custom drivers and firmware tailored for HP hardware. This can result in:

  • Missing or malfunctioning features (e.g., audio, camera, wireless).
  • Inability to identify certain components due to a lack of driver metadata.
  • Reduced performance or stability.

Recommended Solution: Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool

To ensure full compatibility and restore your system with all necessary drivers, we strongly recommend using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool. This tool downloads the OEM image designed specifically for your laptop model, including:

  • Pre-installed HP drivers
  • HP firmware updates
  • HP support utilities

Once installed, the system will automatically detect and install all required drivers.

What You’ll Need:

  • A 32GB USB drive (minimum)
  • A working Windows PC to create the recovery media

🔗 Official Guide & Download:

👉 HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support

Steps to Use:

  1. Download and install the HP Cloud Recovery Tool on another Windows PC.
  2. Insert your 32GB USB drive.
  3. Enter your laptop’s product ID or serial number.
  4. Let the tool create the recovery media.
  5. Boot your HP laptop from the USB and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
