I installed the programmable key app, but it does not work because I do not have the needed driver. When will HP give us the necessary drivers?

Hi @Eliottaro1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
The HP Programmable Key app from the Microsoft Store is only the front-end interface. For the key to function, your system also needs:
- HP Hotkey Support Service (sometimes called HP Hotkey UWP Service)
- HP System Event Utility (for keyboard events)
- A compatible BIOS that exposes the programmable key functionality
Without these components, the app cannot detect the key and will show errors like “Hotkey service is not running” or fail to save settings.
Current Status of Drivers
- HP has not yet released a standalone driver package for consumer models like Pavilion or Envy that include the programmable key.
- The feature is fully supported only on certain business-class laptops (EliteBook, ZBook, ProBook) where the HP Hotkey Support driver is preinstalled.
- For consumer laptops, HP is working on integrating this functionality into future driver updates, but there is no confirmed release date yet.
What You Can Do Now
- Run HP Support Assistant
- Download HP Support Assistant | HP® Support.
- Check for pending updates. Sometimes the Hotkey Service is bundled with other updates.
- Install HP System Event Utility
- This utility often restores hotkey functionality.
- Available in the Microsoft Store: HP System Event Utility.
- Reset and Reinstall the App
- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps → HP Programmable Key → Advanced Options → Reset.
- If still broken, uninstall and reinstall from the Microsoft Store.
- Check BIOS Updates
- Visit Official HP® Support for your model.
- Install the latest BIOS and firmware updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
