My camera stopped working in Feb of this year and I've been trying to trouble shoot.  The system says its working properly, but I also get the message that there is a switch blocking it.  Can you please assist.  I've tried everything from driver updates to disabling and reenabling to going through all the function keys.  Thanks

Hi there @BessPark, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand your laptop camera stopped working earlier this year and you're seeing a message about a switch blocking it, even though Device Manager shows it's working properly. Let's walk through some steps to resolve this.

Check for Physical Camera Privacy Switch or Shutter

Many HP laptops have a physical privacy shutter or camera kill switch:

  • Look near the top edge of your screen for a slider or button that covers the camera lens.
  • On some models, pressing F8 or F10 toggles the camera privacy mode.
  • If you see a red or white dot on the camera lens, the shutter may be engaged.

Confirm Camera is Enabled in BIOS

Sometimes the camera is disabled at the firmware level:

  1. Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  2. Navigate to Security > Device Security or Advanced > Built-in Device Options.
  3. Ensure Integrated Camera is Enabled.
  4. Save changes and exit.

Reinstall Camera Driver

Even if the driver looks fine, a clean reinstall can help:

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  2. Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras.
  3. Right-click your camera and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

Alternatively, you can install the latest driver from HP:

Check Windows Privacy Settings

Windows may be blocking camera access:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
  2. Make sure Camera access is turned On.
  3. Scroll down and ensure apps like Zoom, Teams, or Camera have permission.

Test Camera Functionality

Try using the built-in Camera app:

  • Press Win + S, type Camera, and open the app.
  • If it shows “Camera is blocked,” it’s likely a privacy switch or BIOS setting.
