Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I recently upgraded my machine for the 3rd time over a 10 year period, and it is running windows 11. Sadly that mean that some of my really old software is incompatible, and I decided to try and run windows 8.1 from an older hp laptop in a virtual machine. The problem I'm having is not having my microsoft product key for windows 8.1. I suppose this if probably a grey area when it comes to product ownership and rights of use, since I won't be running it on the older laptop. But that machine is ancient, run's hot, and is barely functionable, lol. Also while getting a copy of windows 8.1 is easy, I don't believe you can purchase a license anymore. Not for certain though. Any thoughts and assistance would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mark

Hi:

The Windows 8.1 product key is encrypted in your notebook's BIOS.

You would not be able to use it on another PC.

You can download and install the free Showkey Plus utility from the Microsoft store that will show you the W8.1 product key in your PC's BIOS.
