Welcome to our HP Community forum!
The ability to enable Num Lock at startup isn't always directly configurable in the BIOS, especially in newer systems like your HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 series. However, this can usually be achieved through a registry tweak in Windows. Here are the steps:
Solution: Enable Num Lock at Startup via Windows Registry
Open the Windows Registry Editor:
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type regedit and press Enter. Confirm any User Account Control (UAC) prompts.
Navigate to the Keyboard Registry Settings:
- In the Registry Editor, go to:HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
- In the Registry Editor, go to:
Modify the InitialKeyboardIndicators Value:
- Find the entry named InitialKeyboardIndicators in the right pane.
- Double-click on it and set the value to:
- 2 to enable Num Lock at startup.
- 0 to disable Num Lock at startup.
Save and Exit:
- Click OK to save the change.
- Close the Registry Editor.
Restart Your Laptop:
- Restart the system to verify that Num Lock is enabled when Windows starts.
Additional Notes:
- If the registry tweak doesn’t work, check the Fast Startup settings in Windows. Fast Startup can sometimes interfere with Num Lock behavior:
- Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Save changes and restart.

Thanks for the rapid response. The "value data" in InitialKeyboardIndicators is a pretty long string, 2147483648. Do I change this entire 10 character long value to 2? I know nothing about registries, but that doesn't sound right.
I appreciate your help!

Thanks for the quick reply. The "data" field in the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" was set to 2147483648. Are you suggesting that I change the entire 10-number string to 2? That doesn't feel right. I did uncheck the Fast Startup as you suggested.
Thanks!
