Good Day My Wonderful HP Support Community,

I have  an HP-Chromebook of unknown age.  The model number(s) - I have 2 for some reason is/are 14-ca064dx and 3T0J1UA.

I have recently been getting unwanted pop-ups whenever I use my Google search engine to ask a question, or whenever I log in to the website for one of the companies where I frequently shop.

I had this problem in the past, and spent a good deal of money for someone to tell me that I simply needed to clear my cache.  I cleared my cache and the problem went away - no more "totally random" pop-ups from unsolicited vendors.

I was told to not accept any more cookies to prevent this from happening again, and since that time I have rejected all cookies.  However, the problem is happening again, but in a much more targeted way.

For example, I will be putting items into a cart for iHerb, and in the middle of signing in to my account, a pop up from iHerb will appear.  All these pop-ups are directly related to the website I am visiting.  If I am not paying close attention, sometimes I will begin transacting business with the pop up instead of the initial account.  Luckily, so far, I have caught myself, and have exited the pop up before completing any business.  I may not always be so lucky.

I've cleaned my cache several times since this began, but this time it does not help with the account related pop ups.  Does anyone have a suggestion, or suggestions for me?

Hi @Tiramisu2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Unwanted pop-ups can be frustrating, but there are simple steps you can take to address this issue on your HP Chromebook:

Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: This often resolves pop-up issues as cached data might contain remnants of unwanted ads.

  • Open Google Chrome.
  • Click on the three dots in the upper-right corner.
  • Go to Settings > Privacy and Security.
  • Choose "Clear browsing data" and select "Cookies and other site data" as well as "Cached images and files"; then click "Clear data."

Check and Remove Unwanted Extensions: Sometimes extensions can cause pop-ups.

  • Type chrome://extensions in the URL bar.
  • Review the list of extensions and remove or disable any that you do not recognize or no longer need.

Enable Pop-Up Blocker: Ensure the pop-up blocker is activated.

  • Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings.
  • Under "Permissions," select "Pop-ups and redirects" and ensure that the setting is toggled to "Blocked."

Update Chrome OS: Keeping your Chromebook up to date ensures you have the latest security fixes.

  • Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for updates.

Scan for Malware: Use a Chromebook-compatible antivirus or anti-malware program to scan for any potential threats.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Jerry,

Thank you so much for your help with my pop-ups.  I have followed your instructions and was doing well until I got to the step where I am supposed to go to "Site Settings" under "Privacy and Security".  I can't locate the "Site Settings" option.

Anymore suggestions for me?

Best regards,

Hi Jerry_57,

Thank you for your instructions.  Yes, I have a "settings".  I have reached the part of your instructions where you told me to "Enable the pop up Blocker".  I went to "settings", then I went to "Privacy and Security".  Then, I believe you told me to go from "Privacy and Security" to "Site Settings".  This is where I get stalled.  There is nothing on my screen that says "Site Settings".

Thanks for any help or advice you are able to offer.

HI @Tiramisu2,

Thank you for your response.

To enable the pop-up blocker, follow these steps:

Open Chrome: Click on the Chrome icon to open your web browser.

Access Settings: Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner to open the Chrome menu, and select "Settings" from the dropdown.

Privacy and Security: In the left sidebar, click on "Privacy and security."

Site Settings: While you mentioned you couldn’t find "Site Settings," it should be available under "Privacy and security." Look for "Site settings" here.

Pop-ups and Redirects: In "Site settings," scroll down to find the "Pop-ups and redirects" section. Click it to open.

Block Pop-ups: Here, you can toggle the switch to block pop-ups. Make sure this setting is turned on to prevent pop-ups from appearing.
