I've read through a LOT of the problems & solutions related to Hp laptops and charging issues. I've tried several to the "fixes" with no success. In my case the laptop will charge until I turn it on. As soon as I turn it on, the charge led goes out and the icon only shows that I'm on battery. The "on battery" icon and led never change state as long as the laptop is powered up.

Around a year ago, I had a similar problem with charging. I did some searching and found that there was a bios update to fix the problem that time. I'm on bios version .40 (I think) at the moment, which appears to be the most current.

I have tried holding the power button for 15 seconds, uninstalling the widows battery and acpi power management drivers and various sequences of plugging in the charger & turning on the laptop. All with no success. One thing I have noticed in all of my searching, this (charging problems) seems to be a common issue with hp laptops. I keep finding threads on how to fix the problem that doesn't seem to fix it. I've had problems with this laptop & charging before, but most of those I've been able to solve by unplugging the charger for a little while. Any chance HP will acknowledge there is a problem and push out a more permanent fix?

Thanks, I'll try contacting support. Just a thought, I see A LOT of posts with very similar issues, any chance HP could just push out an effective driver for the power adapter? With as many complaints as I've seen related to power charging, I would hope HP would be more on top of this problem than they appear to be.

Just a little follow up, went through troubleshooting with hp phone support. Component testing shows that the ac adapter has failed. Ordered a replacement from Amazon, but definitely skeptical that this will fix the problem. In any case, I'll report back when I get the new charger in.

OK, the charging issue "appears" to have been resolved, again. I have no confidence in it lasting, though. Some time back( maybe a year or more ago) I did the firmware update to fix my first problem with charging on this laptop. When it started having charging problems again, I went back to look for another FW update. The support site showed a new FW release in May 2019 (v.40a). I downloaded/installed the update shortly after this problem started, but it would never recognize the ac adapter. After multiple other attempted fixes, the laptop would still only charge when in sleep and wouldn't recognize the original charger. I ended up buying a Dell 90w USB-C charger (1/2 the price of an HP charger). The laptop would see it and give me the "only use genuine HP adapter for full performance" notice, but still only charge when of or sleeping.

I've been fighting this issue for a couple months off & on. Today I tried the firmware update, again. This time it appears to have worked. I have no idea why it worked this time and not the multiple times I tried before. Hp support assistant still shows it as v.40 while it should be .40a. In any case, ALL of the diagnostic tools showed a FAILED ac adapter. The same diagnostics show it as PASS, now. I also see pretty much every "solution" in the discussion board being a link to purchase a new charger.  Needless to say, I am VERY disappointed in HP and will definitely look at other brands when the time comes to replace this laptop. I ran across a lot of other discussions about charging problems from HP laptops, you'd think they'd have a better solution to these problems by now.

In summary, I applied the latest firmware update and it fixed my charging issue, for now. Based on what I have seen from HP, I fully expect more issues in the future.
