HP Laptop PC 15-da3001tu
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello HP Community,

I recently had to get my laptop's primary SSD replaced at a local repair centre after the original drive failed. The technician installed a fresh copy of Windows 11 Pro on the new drive. Originally, my laptop came pre-installed with Microsoft Office Home. However, because the repair shop did a clean install of a generic Pro OS, the factory recovery partitions and the original digital entitlement links are completely gone. I checked the motherboard hardware info using system tools, and it shows my original factory injected key is: Win 10 RTM CoreSingleLanguage OEM:DM. Because the OS tier was changed to Pro, the Microsoft Store "Included with device" section is completely blank, and my Microsoft Account dashboard doesn't show the license because it was never manually bound before the drive failure. Since the motherboard is original and holds the valid factory license footprint, how can I reclaim or trigger the digital entitlement for my pre-installed Office Home on this new installation?

Thank you for your help!

Hi  @AnshSharma

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out. I understand you recently replaced the SSD in your HP Laptop PC and are trying to recover the pre-installed Microsoft Office Home license that originally came with your device. I'll be glad to help guide you through some checks.

To better understand your situation, could you kindly confirm the below details :

  1. When you open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.), do you see an option to Sign In or Activate Office?
  2. Have you installed Office from your Microsoft Account, Microsoft Store, or from another source after the Windows reinstallation?
  3. Could you kindly share a screenshot of any activation or licensing message you receive when attempting to open an Office application?

In the meantime, Kindly try the below steps and confirm :

Step 1: Sign In With Your Microsoft Account

If the Office license was associated with a Microsoft Account during initial setup:

  1. Open Word or Excel
  2. Select Sign In
  3. Use any Microsoft Accounts that may have been used previously on the device
  4. Check whether Office activates automatically

Step 2: Check Microsoft Services & Subscriptions

Sign in to the Microsoft Account portal and verify whether Office appears under Services & Subscriptions:

Microsoft Services & Subscriptions - Click here

I hope this helps.

1. I cannot even open the apps anymore. Every time I try to do so, it says "Updating Microsoft 365 and Office, please wait a moment..." and after a while responds with WINWORD.EXE - Application Error; The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application. Before I could either Quick Repair or Online Repair it and then it would open but with very limited features and ask me to get Microsoft 365 subscription but even that is not happening anymore. Now, through settings, I get a Repair option that finishes executing almost immediately and seems to not change a thing.

2. I am not sure. I wasn't even aware because the reinstallation happened in February 2025 and the Microsoft Office apps had been working the same way they did before ever since it happened. They kept working until very recently.

3. I can do that once I get it working again.

I have already tried logging in with my account. It doesn't activate Office. It doesn't appear under Services & Subscriptions under Microsoft Account portal either.

Hi @AnshSharma,

Thank you for the update and for sharing the additional details.

I understand that you're now receiving the WINWORD.EXE Application Error (0xc0000142) when attempting to open Office applications, and that signing in with your Microsoft account does not show any Office entitlement under your Microsoft account portal. I appreciate you confirming the troubleshooting steps you've already completed.
