The HP Support Assistant symbol in the task bar constantly shows a yellow triangle containing an exclamation mark and the tool tip meesage says "recommended action needed." Opening the support assistant shows the message:
"HP Printers - which cartridges work with my HP printer?"
I have read the message and clicked the delete icon, but the message and the yellow triangle stubbornly remain. Please advise how to remove this message once and for all from the Support Assistant. The printer works fine!
Many thanks
Dave

@WAWood may well be right about that stubborn message; it may want to stick around, at least for the present.
For entirely other reasons, my own installation of HPSA was "bugging my trip" with various messages that tend to repeat or be replaced with yet another helpful hint.
This is my workaround:
Open HPSA > Settings >
Under Choose how you would like to receive updates from HP >
Select Check for updates, but let me choose which updates to download and install
Under Choose how you would like to be notified >
UNCHECK all the notification options
Save
NOTE:
- "Check for updates" causes the HPSA to indicate when updates are available; the program will not attempt to download the updates without your approval
- UNCHECK "all notification options" causes the HPSA to fall off the Taskbar
Windows key > search the Application list, find, and click HP Help and Support >
Right-Click on HP Support Assistant > Pin to Start
NOTE:
- Pin to Start causes the HPSA program to become available on your Start screen
- To access HPSA: Windows key > Click on HPSA
Poof! No more triangles, constant messages, or unexpected Updates.
Reminder:
- Never, ever let the HPSA update your BIOS
- BIOS updates should only be done when necessary
- BIOS updates should be done manually

I wish I had good news for you -- but I don't ...
HP has been seen in the media recently due to an update it pushed out that crippled folks' printers if they were using non-HP printer cartridges.
HP's public response to this has been to indicate they will push out an update that, once again, allows those customers to use their HP printers, but now, with non-HP printer cartridges.
If you are using such cartidges, most likely, you will be permanently stuck seeing this message.
But ... at least you can still use your printer!
I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor represent, HP
