I would like to do a Clean Install.  I have a  Kingston USB Flash Drive 60GB that I would like to use.

Hi,

The 60 (64) GB is not very suitable as it is too big for your needs. You'd better use a blank DVD or smaller capacity USB thumbdrive (e.g. 4-8-16 GB)

You can use this free utility

The tool will download ISO images from Microsoft and has lots of options for many Windows versions including OEM. If you use it, be careful to select the correct Windows ISO for the OEM, x86 or x64 edition, Home/Pro/Ultimate, etc... based on the Windows edition and info from the COA sticker

When download completes, you will need to write or "burn" the ISO image and boot from a bootable media.

** How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

or

** How to write ISO to DVD >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows

instructions are for Ubuntu, but you need to use the ISO image of Windows

When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive or the DVD prepared previously

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately start hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive or the DVD as a boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows (new installation - custom, not upgrade)

Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on a clean Disk 0 Unallocated space

Install drivers taken from HP web site when Win installation completes

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

i  have downloaded iso and burned DVD with Win 7 Pro 64-bit before; have the DVD.  When installing Windows from the DVD at what point should I connect to the Internet?  Should the operating system be updated before installing drivers for HP 8440p?

You will be able to connect to the Network only after completeing the Windows 7 installation.

The installation itself is an offline process

No, not necessary.

I recommend you install drivers, install your apps you want, install anivirus/firewall/security products, copy your files and leave the updating of Windows the very last procedure you will do.

Actually, I recommended that you disabled Windows Automatic updates. You may set this option to only check automatically and notify you but to never install automatically

Hope this helps

I have a DVD installation disk for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 ready.  I plan to insert it into the dsik drive on my HP 8440p  and install windows  to a SSD inside my notebook.  After formatting using NTFS file format drive C: is 117GB.

Do you advice partitioning the drive or using any special drive configuration settings?

Immediately after installing Windows I plan to disable Windows Automatic Update feature.   Are there other configuration settings I should make, such as to Windows Firewall?

Immediately after installing Win 7 Pro 64-bit I plan to install Microsoft Security Essentials.  I have downloaded MSEInstall.exe to a USB Flash Drive.  Is there any way to download the latest virus and spyware definitions so when I connect to the Internet MSE is Up-to-date.

No, use default settings.

If you are not connected behind rounter, ensure you select your Internet connection as public (when asked)

You could https://support.microsoft.com/en-ae/help/971606/how-to-manually-download-the-latest-definition-updat...

but you do not need to. Viruses and malware don't fly and won't attack you as soon as you build your PC or connected it to the Net. Actually, once you connect the PC, you will be able to update the software using the program's interface and options.

Note that MSE configures Windows Updates and sets them to Automatic - you may need to manually adjust them after installing MSE if you do not want them automatic

After installing your new Windows installation, you might eventually want to look at this > https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_7-update/using-the-windows-7-convenience-up...

to manually update to the unofficial "SP2" to speed up your Windows Updates

Thank you for telling me about SP2.  I plan to use it.

Ready to make Clean Install,  do you think a Clean Install solve these issues:

  • Slow start – takes about 55 seconds, should be 10-15 seconds
  • CHKDSK fails to run
  • Macrium Reflect backup validation fails
  • SoftPaqs shows 8 files available but uninstalled including
  •       Intel  PROSet Extensions
  •       HP Privacy Manager
  •       HP Connections Manager
  •       Intel High Definition Graphics Driver
  • Windows Update failure to update:
  •       Intel Management Engin Interface
  •       Synaptics PS2/ Port Touchpad
  •       Intel Management Interface driver
  •       RICOH smartcard reader
  • Event Viewer Errors:
  •      Event ID 7034 Intel PROSet/Wireless Zero Configuration Ser. terminated unexpectedly
  •      Event ID 10 WMI evets cannot be delivered through the filter
  •      Event ID 1000 Application Error Zero Configuration Serice time stamp exception
  •      Event ID 6 Validity USDK cannot be found
  •      Event ID 37 Kernel Processor limited by firmware

Your slow startup is caused by the reasons I mentioned before  - software problem with lots of incompatible software, so if this McAfee software and other problems are gone, the speed up of your PC will increase a lot. And yes, these problems will be gone by performing clean installation with formatting the HDD.

Not sure why your Check Disk fails to run now but I suspect Clean installation may heal it. You do not need to run CheckDisk occasionally, only if you experience issues.

Macrum Reflect - cannot comment on this software, but you do have more serious problems now and I suspect they might be related. In case you continue to have problems with this software, please reach to Macrum's support team

SoftPaq - you do not need to use it and run it - it is used in special cases, just manually install drivers [once] after Clean Install and forget about SoftPaq. Same for Windows Update. Don't worry about it. Install "SP2" and relax

These Errors you see in the Event Viewer are nothing to worry about - if you do not experience any problems with the software mentioned, don't even open Event Viewer. Event Viewer is just a logger, not meant to be used by casual users and non-tech savvy people.

Cheers!
