I'm looking for the Sphinx battery fix. My laptop has been in use for a while, but now that I use it less, the battery already had to be replaced once because it expanded dramatically. Laptop is still fine for a while, but the drain doesn't go away, no matter what I do to it.

Hi @randomdays

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that the battery charge is decreasing even when the notebook is completely shut down. I’ll be happy to assist you in troubleshooting this issue. To better understand the situation, could you please confirm the following:

  • Have you recently made any hardware or software changes to the notebook?
  • What is the product number of the HP notebook?
  • Approximately how much battery charge is lost while the notebook is completely powered off, and over what period?
  • Does the issue occur when the notebook is shut down with the AC adapter disconnected?

Meanwhile I would request you to please perform the below steps.

Since there may be BIOS or battery-management factors contributing to battery drain while the notebook is powered off, please perform the following steps:

Update the BIOS and drivers

  • Download and install the latest BIOS available for your exact HP notebook model from the HP Support website.
  • Open HP Support Assistant and install all available recommended driver and firmware updates.
  • Restart the notebook after the updates are completed.
  • For information on using HP Support Assistant, refer to the official HP document:
HP Support Assistant – Using HP Support Assistant

Reinstall the battery driver

  • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Batteries.
  • Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device.
  • Confirm the uninstall if prompted.
  • Shut down the notebook completely.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • If the battery is removable, remove it.
  • Press and hold the Power button for approximately 60 seconds.
  • Reinstall the battery, if applicable, and reconnect the AC adapter.
  • Turn on the notebook and check whether the battery shows that it is charging.
  • The battery driver should be automatically reinstalled by Windows after restarting the notebook.

Run an HP Battery Check

  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to Battery and Performance or Battery Check, depending on the version.
  • Run the battery diagnostic and note the result.
  • If the battery health status indicates Replace, the battery may need to be replaced.

Test with known-good hardware

  • If the battery continues to drain while the notebook is completely shut down:
  • If available, test with HP AC adapter.
  • If the battery is removable and a compatible known-good battery is available, test with that battery as well.
  • If a known-good battery exhibits the same behavior and the BIOS/drivers are up to date, further hardware diagnostics may be required, and the system board or charging/power-management circuitry may need to be evaluated by an HP-authorized service provider.
  • Please provide the Battery Check result so we can determine the appropriate next step.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Laptop is a HP spectre 15-df000no (yes not that new anymore).

Battery drains about 5 to 8% per night, while laptop is completely shut down and of course no power connected.

No hardware/software changes besides battery replacement. Behavior never changed. Old battery drained too, which is why it went bad. Since laptop still in use and has Win11, I want to keep it alive/good as long as possible.

All the ACPI fixes I've tried (including disconnect/connect and reinstall driver). All software is up to date. Battery check is fine. Charging works perfectly with the original HP 135w charger and an original HP 150w charger.

I'll run the battery check as soon as I am able and show results.

Hi @randomdays

Thank you for responding.

I understand your concern regarding the battery losing approximately 5–8% charge overnight even when the notebook is completely shut down and disconnected from AC power. Since the behavior was present with the previous battery as well and has continued after replacement, it would be important to verify whether the discharge is related to the system’s power-management behavior or a hardware-level issue rather than the battery itself.

Please run the HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Battery Test and share the complete result, including the battery status and any Failure ID generated. Please also confirm whether the battery percentage drops consistently by approximately the same amount each night. Once the diagnostic results are available, I can determine the appropriate next troubleshooting steps.

Have a good day.
