OMEN MAX 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-ak0000 (C50G0AV)

Device: Omen Max 16 AMD Ryzen AI HX 375 with Nvidia 5080

This laptop ships with a 330 Watt adapter, and requires this for the 5080 Gpu to draw more than 35 Watts. **edit: I originally said it was 30  Watts.

My issue: I have an HP G4 280 Watt dock, and the 280W psu puts the laptop in this low-power mode. 280W should be more than enough to run the AMD 375 and 5080 at full power.

Question: Can I force high-power mode even if there is a small battery drain?

Apparently, the G4 dock isn't sending a signal that the laptop understands, so the laptop just assumes it is an "unknown power supply". Consider this matter closed.

@OmenicTacos,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

OK, let me get this straight: you're trying a lower-wattage power supply (280-watt instead of the stock 330-watt) to power a high-end gaming laptop?  This is not advisable, especially keeping in mind that HP is not particularly known for providing a 'generous' power supply for most of their laptops.

Your laptop 'expects' a certain wattage upon powering on, and if it doesn't detect that, predictably, you'll see the low-power mode you mentioned.

Kind Regards,

Hi @OmenicTacos

I understand that you are using a dock.  HP Thunderbolt Dock 280W G4 ,  in the USB-C port that is power delivery, According to the service manual, it receives an input of 100 watts, which should be sufficient.

It delivers 280W via the barrel connector, but the 5080 GPU is still limited to only 35 Watts with this connected. This is true if I only use the barrel connector or both connectors at once.

Surely there should be a way to force a higher power mode with a 280 Watt adapter, as the 330 Watt adapter is the same one used for the more power-hungry Intel 275HX w/ 5090 version.

My recommendation is that you use both, if you see that the performance is correct .

Ther performance is the same with either the usb-c, barrel connector, or both.

In general, this graphics card is designed for 80 watts TDP, but maybe because it uses the USB-C port, HP has set a limit of 35 watts.

This issue occurs when I don't use the dock's usb-c connector at all, just the 280W barrel plug. I suspect that the 330W adapter is probably overspecced for this particular variant.
