Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I bought an HP Pavilion from amazon a couple of weeks ago and during the initial set up phase I had to type  in my microsoft password but couldn't remember what it was. In order to reset my password I had to have an access code sent to my phone. My number was wrong so I had to first update that info, but it will be a month before my phone number clears in their system. So my new computer is stuck on a verify your identity screen with my old phone number as the only option. I am wondering if it is possible to restart the initial setup process as I remembered my password. I tried letting the battery run down and then turning my computer back on but the same screen comes up. Is ther anything I can do or do I just have to wait until my current phone number updates with microsoft?

Hello,

Best thing you could do is perform a reset and start over.

Tap F11 after powering on, go to troubleshoot > reset this PC> remove everything> just remove my files > reset.

Keep in mind this can take 1-2 hours and the laptop needs to be plugged in.

After the reset finishes, DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT connect you your Wi-Fi or you will be FORCED to log on using a microsoft account.

Make sure to select "skip this step" when it asks you to get connected.

Proceed to create a local account and you're done.

Good luck.

Hi AlexandruN,

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested and nothing. 😞   I"ll prob have to take it into a store.

Just found a solution!! I held down the power button for 15 seconds and then turned it back on. Initial setup restarted. Whew!!

Ah, yes. The good old turning it off and back on again.

Personally, I never mention it as I feel it's insulting to the user's intelligence.
