Transfer hard drive space

I have an HP pavillion dv7 model: LY122UA#ABC

My C:\ Drive only has 73 gigabytes of space, but my D:\ Drive has 500 gigabytes. All the programs I install default to the C:\ drive but there is never enough space on it. I was wondering if there was any way to somehow transfer  space from my D:\ drive to my C:\ drive to that my D:\ drive has less space and my C:\ drive has more.

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, there IS a way to do this, just not as simple as you might think

Basically, what you do is the following:

1) Shrink down one drive to create some unused space

2) Expand another drive, one adjacent to the unused space, to take up that space.

So basically, it's two operations.

Windows provides a tool for doing thish -- Disk Management -- but that can prevent you from shrinking drives as much as you would like.
