Hello HP Community,
I am using an HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14-fa0xxx (AMD Ryzen 5 8640HS, Windows 11). Recently, to fix a thermal shutdown issue, I updated the BIOS from the official HP website.
While the thermal issue was solved, the update has completely locked the power delivery to all USB-A ports. There is no power or light in any wired mouse or phone connected to these ports.
I have already tried updating AMD Chipset drivers, Windows PowerShell/CMD force enables, registry overrides, and BIOS Recovery defaults, but Windows terminal throws a "Generic Failure / CIM Exception" error, meaning the lock is strictly inside the EC Firmware/BIOS.
My warranty is expired, and it's unfair that an official HP update broke working hardware ports. Please release a new supportive BIOS patch to unlock the USB power delivery immediately. Thank you.

Hi  @jitender_envy

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that after updating the BIOS on your HP Envy x360, the thermal shutdown behaviour appears to be resolved, but the USB-A ports are no longer providing power to connected devices. I appreciate the detailed troubleshooting you have already performed.

To assist you further, could you kindly help us with a few details?

  1. Did all USB-A ports stop providing power immediately after the BIOS update, or did the issue appear sometime later?
  2. Are the ports detected in Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" without any warning symbols?
  3. Have you tested the USB-A ports while the system is connected to AC power as well as on battery power?
  4. Have you tried booting into HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and checking whether the USB ports detect any connected USB device outside of Windows?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

Step 1: Perform a Hardware Reset - Click here for steps

  1. Shut down the notebook.
  2. Disconnect all external devices.
  3. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 15-20 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the AC adapter and restart the notebook.

Step 2: Check USB Settings in BIOS

  1. Restart the PC and repeatedly tap F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Navigate through the Advanced or System Configuration menus.
  3. Verify that any settings related to USB Ports, USB Charging, External USB Ports, or Legacy USB Support are enabled.
  4. Save changes and restart.

Step 3: Reinstall USB Controllers

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  3. Right-click each USB Root Hub, Generic USB Hub, and Host Controller entry and select Uninstall Device.
  4. Restart the computer and allow Windows to reinstall the USB drivers automatically.

Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics - Click here for steps

  1. Press F2 repeatedly during startup to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  2. Run the System Tests and Component Tests available for USB functionality, if listed.

I hope this helps.
