HP Pavilion x360 - 14-ba125cl
Microsoft Windows 11

I can connect the external hard drive to USB-C and it works just fine.  However, when I connect the docking station it does not work.

Hi @David0313,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP Pavilion x360 - 14-ba125cl works well with an external hard drive via USB-C but not with a docking station, here are some troubleshooting steps and considerations to resolve the issue:

1. Check Docking Station Compatibility:

  • Ensure Compatibility: Verify that the docking station is compatible with your laptop’s USB-C port. Some docking stations require USB-C with Power Delivery (PD) or Thunderbolt 3/4, which may not be supported by all USB-C ports.
  • Driver Requirements: Some docking stations need specific drivers to function correctly. Check the docking station manufacturer’s website for any necessary drivers or software and install them.

2. Verify Power Supply:

  • Power Connection: Ensure that the docking station is properly connected to a power source if it requires one. Some docking stations need an external power adapter to function correctly.
  • Power Delivery: If the docking station is using USB-C Power Delivery, make sure your laptop’s USB-C port supports it and that the docking station is getting sufficient power.

3. Test the Docking Station with Another Device:

  • Cross-Check: Try connecting the docking station to another compatible laptop or device to see if it works. This can help determine if the issue is with the docking station itself.

4. Update Drivers and Firmware:

  • USB Drivers: Go to Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, and update the drivers for any USB controllers listed.
  • Docking Station Firmware: Check if there is a firmware update available for your docking station on the manufacturer’s website and apply it if necessary.

5. Check for USB-C Compatibility Settings:

  • BIOS Settings: Enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc, F2, or F10 during startup) and check for any settings related to USB-C or Thunderbolt that might affect docking station functionality.
  • Power Management Settings: Ensure that the USB-C port settings in Windows Power Options are set to provide full power to USB devices.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @David0313 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

6. Examine Docking Station Connections:

  • USB-C Port: Confirm that the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the laptop and the docking station.
  • Alternate Ports: If the docking station has multiple USB-C ports, try using a different port on the docking station.

7. Test Different Cables:

  • USB-C Cable: The issue might be with the USB-C cable itself. Test with a different USB-C cable to rule out a cable issue.

8. Check for Conflicts or Errors:

  • Device Manager: Look for any errors or conflicts related to the docking station in Device Manager. Uninstall and reinstall any devices that show errors.
  • Event Viewer: Check Event Viewer for any system logs related to USB or docking station issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the issue with your docking station. If the problem persists, it may be helpful to consider whether the docking station itself might be defective or if there are any known compatibility issues with your specific laptop model.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact the HP phone support teams for your laptop and the docking station.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
