I have a Crucial X9 external 1 TB solid state drive connected to the UCB C port that does not show up so I have to disconnect and reconnect it to get it to show up.  I believe it has something to do with USB SuperSpeed Type-C port with HP Sleep and Charge configuration that comes with the HP Laptop.  How to I get the port to stop going to Sleep so the drive will stay active?

Hi,

Thank you for sharing the Serial Number.

I would request you to please the below steps.

Disable HP Sleep and Charge

  • Open HP Support Assistant or HP Command Center (preinstalled on most HP laptops).
  • Look for Sleep and Charge settings.
  • Turn Sleep and Charge OFF for the USB‑C port.
  • This prevents the port from entering low‑power mode when idle.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

  • Open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.
  • If USB settings isn’t visible, unhide it with this command in Command Prompt (Admin):
  • Code
  • powercfg -attributes SUB_USB 17aaa29b-8b43-4b94-aafe-35f64daaf1ee -ATTRIB_HIDE
  • Then set USB selective suspend setting → Disabled for both On battery and Plugged in.

Change USB Root Hub Power Management

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right‑click each USB Root Hub (USB 3.0/3.1/Type‑C) → Properties → Power Management.
  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @MikeT1349,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your USB-C port not staying active. It may be due to power management settings that enable the port to go into sleep mode. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Disable USB Selective Suspend

  • Open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings → USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set both On battery and Plugged in to Disabled.
  • This prevents Windows from powering down USB ports.

Device Manager Settings

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • For each USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub, right-click → Properties → Power Management.
  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Update Chipset & USB Drivers

  • Go to HP’s support site for your laptop model.
  • Download the latest chipset drivers and Intel/AMD USB controller drivers.
  • Outdated drivers often cause external SSDs to disconnect.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I went to Control Panel - Power Options - Change Plan settings - Change Advanced Power settings and there is no Expand USB settings/ so I am not able to get to USB selective suspend setting.  How do I change this?

Thanks

Also, could you be more specific about updating the drivers?  I didn't see a listing for INTEL?AMD USB controller drivers and the latest chipset drivers had several things listed.

I couldn't HP Disable Sleep and Charge as there are no Sleep and Charge settings in HP Support Assistant. Also, I couldn't disable USB Selective Suspend as there are no USB settings visible so I tried using Command Prompt (Admin) and received the following message: "Code" is not recognized as an internal or external command, Operable program or batch file. I had already made the changes in USB Root Hub Management in Device Manager.
