HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ae0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a newly released HP Spectre x360 with an i7-8550U CPU and Thunderbolt 3. The documentation for my specific model (13-ae052nr) as well as the Thunderbolt 3 support indicate that DisplayPort Alternate Mode should be supported.

I've tried several different USB-C to DisplayPort adapters and none of them are correctly recognized:

  Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort 4K 60Hz Adapter

  USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to DisplayPort 4K@60Hz Adapter, Benfei USB Type C to DisplayPort/Dp Male to Fe...

  UPTab USB-C (Type-C) to DisplayPort++ Active Adapter

When viewing them in Device Manager they show up as "Billboard Interface" devices and/or "Unknown USB device (Port Reset Failed)".

The devices are plugged directly into the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the laptop. I've got the latest drivers according to HP Support Assistant (I've  manually verified Thunderbolt/Display drivers are the latest) and I've also got a fully updated version of Windows 10. I've tried uninstalling the USB devices and rediscovering them. I've tried restarting the machine with them plugged in.

Any ideas or suggestion on why these adapters are not working/being recognized by the system and what can be done to resolve this?

Hello @BlkItlStl

Ya the Billboard Interface device display is telling you a USB-C device is not compatible.

I cannot think of anything else as it seems you have tried everything you could already. There is no tweaking necessary to make it work. I know another user with a previous gen Spectre X360 had success using this adapter... Cable-Matters

I have not heard of any compatibility issues surrounding the new X360 and USB-C adapters.

I think rather than spend anymore money on adapters, I would contact HP Support for a warranty inquiry.

OR if you purchased from a local store, could you exchange it for another (faster).

Just my opinion.

Hello all,

I also have the exact same problem and error message with my recently bought HP Spectre x360 (13-ae064tu) with Thunderbolt 3. I'm using the offical HP USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter included with the box and it is showing up as  "Billboard Interface" and "Unknown USB device (Port Reset Failed)" as well. I've installed the latest drivers from HP Support Assistant and rediscovered the adapter but still no luck at all.

I wonder if this is a software related issue that hasn't been fixed for a long time or a straightup hardware fault. The adapter is confirmed working as I've successfully connected my smartphone (usb-c port) to my TV and moniter with it. My laptop runs flawlessly except the fact that it couldn't connect to a external moniter / TV with the included adapter as mentioned above.

I'm thinking of looking for a replacement from my local store, but I afraid that it would just be the same since this could be a shared problem with the new X360 laptop.

Any updates about the situation? Have anyone exchanged for another Spectre x360 and get the display adapters working again?

I have the same issue with my HP Spectre x360 13APOXX - stopped recognizing displayport using 2 HP USB C docks and 2 other generic USB C to DisplayPort hubs.. even over HDMI it will only display at 1080p on my 4K display.. maybe hardware error? call it in for warranty?

@hbaeuerle

Yes I would contact HP Support and have them look into it if you are still under warranty.
