I don't know about computer stuff but I do want the best. How do I know if I should install the "optional updates"? Better yet:
What is a reason nót to update these optional software updates?

Hello @Silenemai,
Looking at the options for installation and the description for each driver in your computer's Software and Drivers page, most of them include a title of "1803," relating to the newest version of Windows 10. I would suspect most of the optional updates listed in HP Support Assistant would improve compatibility of the general hardware.
Elan Touchpad: Support for using the trackpad of the computer and allowing customization software.
WLAN: Wireless Local Area Network which basically allows connection of certain devices in a small area.
Graphics: Obviously allows you to actually see the Windows 10 interface. The update may fix some issues you could encounter.
Audio: Most likely fixes, better compatibility, etc.
It's in your best interest to update these even if they may be optional.
Best regards,
Eddy

Hello @Silenemai,
Even those "optional" software will most likely improve functionality of the computer or make the experience smoother.
Could you tell us what these "optional" updates are? I could provide a more accurate answer if you tell us.
Awaiting your response,
Eddy
