Sounds a bit like a hardware/cooling issue, device uses much less power on battery. keep an eye on your CPU temps.

Ubuntu 25.04. was almost stable for me, but had random fps lag issues with gnome/desktop/mouse that make it randomly unusable, this only happens with external USB-C monitors. I switch my device to CachyOS with 6.16 kernel, all lags are gone but the camera does not work, maybe i miss some packages.

I suggest trying the HP-supplied Ubuntu 24.04 and see if the issues persist. I am using that with no stability problems, along with 6.14-oem.

Since you have mentioned that Windows has no problem, it's clearly not a hardware problem.

What is HP supplied Ubuntu 24.04? Where to find it?

HP Recommended

The oem image I have used is the HP-supplied Ubuntu, so it does not work as expected unfortunately. This is bad for a premium laptop. I'm leaning against some sort of power/throttling issues at this point as I do not get the same issues when on battery, and temperatures are fine.

The HP supplied image can be found under the support page for this machine on hp.com. It is Ubuntu 24.04 with oem kernel

Indeed, that OEM version from HP is working flawlessly, even the webcam is working out of the box for some reasons. I gave up using Kubuntu for now, will revisit when next year 26 LTS is out

Could you provide a pointer to the page?

And which EXACT kernel are you using?

HP Recommended

This is the page: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/hp-zbook-ultra-g1a-14-inch-mobile-workstation-pc/2102737532 (choose Linux)

It comes with kernel 6.11.0-1025-oem, but since it didn't work for me I tried 6.14.0-1011-oem (still random reboots for me).

HP Recommended

That strange it came with the "6.11.0-1025-oem", maybe a typo? Mine is "6.11.0-1020-oem" by downloading the image and doing nothing more. The ISO I downloaded on that page you mentioned is called stella-noble-oem-24.04b-20250422-107.iso

HP Recommended

Yes, it was a typo. The correct is linux-image-6.11.0-1020-oem
