What is an "optional" driver?

Searched HP website and Support Assist but no answers. Should I assume drivers flagged as "optional" in Support Assist designed only for those encountering problems? Other than intended model information, the descriptions for "optional" drivers don't offer any indication of what problems they are designed to fix.

BACKGROUND: It seems all required/mandatory/critical drivers have been updated on my newly acquired HP laptop. Be advised I prefer to use the laptop manufacturer's support resources  because drivers offered in Windows Update are poorly tested and often introduce problems.
