HP ENVY 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have just bought my first HP laptop it's an HP ENVY 17 machine. I love it very much but... I bought it because of its in built fingerprint reader to keep my logins simple.Unfortunately I can't use it with my favourite browser, firefox, it disabled this extension.

Why HP does not care about its customers who use Firefox browser?

Is singing an add-on so difficult?

Please HP do not let us so disappointed, just because you didn't sign HP simplepass add-on. Thank you!

I just tested Firefox 47.0 on a Windows 7 Pro / 64bit machine.

It works, although there are some caveats:

  • Firefox may permenantly disable the use of SimplePass at any time
  • Use the latest Series 8 HP SimplePass

Latest version of Series 8 HP SimplePass:

sp75196_HP_SimplePass_V8.0.1.53A_W7-W10 32/64bit

Firefox Archives > Firefox 47.0

Firefox Version 47.0

  • Create a Restore Point

Stop all programs:  Browsers, games, Applications, etc.

Control Panel > icon view > System > System Protection

Click (Highlight) your main disk (C) > Select Create a Restore Point

  • Download and Install Firefox Version 47.0
  • Open Firefox > open / type in URL > about:config >
  • Search for xpinstall.signatures >>
  • Right-Click (line) signatures.required > Toggle the line to set the “Value” to false
  • Close Firefox > (wait a few seconds ) >
  • Open Firefox > Answer questions to install /enable the SimplePass Add-on / Extension

Thank you for your suggestion, now I can enable simplepass plugin in Firefox but I can't add websites in the SP add-on to log in using my fingerprints.

Update:

I was able to log in using simple pass fingerprint on some websites, so there is something on my side.

Thank you! I will accept your answer!

You are welcome.

Commentary

SimplePass does not work on all websites -- in my opinion, this is not anything new and perhaps has to do with the limitations of the (SimplePass) code and the vagaries in Web Site design.

What?

Web Design varies -- there are (apparently) not any rules that require a website to support the "two step" process at website login that saves the UserID and the passcode (password) in a manner that the Biometric software can "read" and store for later use.

Since firefox 48.0.1 simplepass not working, FF disabled it. I checked xpinstall.signatures still set to value FALSE in about:config.

Do you have any idea how to enable SimplePass in the latest version of Firefox?

(The best solution would be if HP can sign and fix this addon.)

Mozilla's recommendation is

"If a signed version is not available, contact the add-on developer or vendor to see if they can offer an updated and signed version of that add-on. You can also ask them to get their add-on signed. "

HP now it's your turn 😉

I sent an email to the maker of the SimplePass software. Here is their reply: Thank you for contacting us about HP SimplePass. We have given HP newer versions of SimplePass that they have qualified to address the extension signing related to Firefox. You will need to contact them to see how to get that version. We gave them versions 8.01.56 and 8.01.61.

However, the only update on the HP site is to version 8.01.46 Rev.A. How do we get the updated version?

By the way, it seems to work fine in IE, it is just Firefox where it is not working.

Herer is the latest version of SimplePass. Seems to work with Firefox:

This is an old post but I found it searching for a solution for the same problem.

I reacted on your reply because it turns off ALL security checks for add-ons.

Isn't this just as smart as instead of giving your friend/partner a key to your house you just leave the doors unlocked and the alarm turned off???

It might fix the immediate problem but it opens up another can of worms at the same time.

Don't mean to diminish your answer, just want others to know that they're throwing security checks of their add-ons out the window at the same time.
