What We Know About Your Laptop:

How to Upgrade to Windows 11:

Here’s a clear, safe path you can upgrade to W11:

  1. Check System Compatibility

    • Run PC Health Check (from Microsoft) or “WhyNotWin11” to confirm TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, etc., are present and enabled.

    • In BIOS, make sure TPM / PTT (TPM) is enabled, and Secure Boot is enabled.

  2. Backup All Important Data

    • Always back up before a major OS upgrade to avoid data loss.

  3. Update BIOS & Firmware / Drivers

  4. Windows Update / Upgrade Assistant

    • Sometimes HP enables the upgrade via Windows Update once the prerequisites are satisfied.

    • If not, use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s website (or Media Creation Tool) to upgrade in place.

  5. Clean Install (if needed)

    • If upgrade fails or you prefer a fresh start, you can do a clean install of Windows 11:

      • Boot from a USB installer (UEFI/GPT).

      • Select the existing partition (usually “C:”) and install Windows 11 (it should migrate the license if the machine is already activated).

      • Install HP drivers and firmware afterward.

  6. Check & Enable OS Features

    • After install, verify TPM is active in Windows via tpm.msc.

    • Ensure Secure Boot is enabled.

    • Update drivers (Wi-Fi, graphics, etc.) from HP’s site if Windows Update didn’t fetch them all.

How to Install Windows 11 in Slightly More Detail:

  1. Download Windows 11 from Microsoft

    • Go to the Microsoft Windows 11 download page (which you already have).

    • Use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant (or download the ISO).

    • The Installation Assistant is safer for keeping files and apps.

  2. Run the installer from within Windows 10

    • If using the ISO, mount it in Windows 10 (right-click → “Mount”) and run setup.exe.

    • Do not boot from USB or DVD for this step — that often forces a clean install.

    • Using the Installation Assistant or in-place ISO install gives you options to keep files/apps.

  3. Choose “Keep personal files and apps”

  4. Continue with the upgrade

    • Let the setup proceed. The PC will reboot several times.

    • Setup will migrate your files and apps and install Windows 11.

    • After finishing, you should land in Windows 11 with your data intact.

  5. Post-upgrade checks

    • Run Windows Update to get the latest cumulative updates and drivers.

    • Check Device Manager for any missing devices and install HP’s Windows 11 drivers from HP’s support site.

    • Confirm TPM, Secure Boot, and any other needed security features are active.

    • Test critical apps and data, make sure everything is working.

Common Pitfalls & Tips:

  • If the "Keep personal files and apps" option is grayed out, it’s often because the installer detected a mismatch (e.g., different system language or editions).

  • Make sure your Windows 11 installer matches your current Windows 10 edition (Home → Home, Pro → Pro) and architecture (64-bit).

  • Ensure no third-party antivirus, disk encryption, or system “tweak” utilities are interfering before starting the upgrade.

  • If things go wrong, you’ll have a Windows.old folder in your system drive — that often holds your original OS and files temporarily, see: Keeping old data when installing Windows 11 from a USB - Microsoft Q&A.
