Hi I don"t underastand this kind of mistake that keeps showing up, when i try to save a written document for instance, it's written that it can"t be saved because it's open. i can"t change anything related to this file/film when it's open.

For instance, If i want to change a name of a file (a film, for instance) while it's open i can"t change the name of the file, why is that and can it be fixed? , In the past in another computer like Toshiba, I could change the name of the file while it was open.

Hi @Adi7812

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The issue you are facing—where a file cannot be changed, saved, or renamed while it's open—is typically related to file locking mechanisms in operating systems. Here’s some context and steps you can take to resolve these issues:

Why Files Can't Be Changed When Open:

When a file is open in many applications, the operating system locks it to prevent changes that might cause conflicts or data corruption. This mechanism ensures data integrity by preventing simultaneous modifications.

Steps to Resolve File Locking Issues:

Close the File Before Modification:

  • Ensure the file you want to rename, move, or save is closed in any application it might be open in. This includes not just visible applications but also background processes that might be accessing the file.

Check for and Close Background Applications:

  • Sometimes, a file might be open in a background process. Use Task Manager to close applications or actively running processes that might be using the file.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Check for applications that might be accessing your file and close them.

Save As a Different File Name:

  • If you’re editing a document and facing issues saving, try saving the file with a different name.
  • Use File > Save As in the application and choose a new name and location.

Restart Your Computer:

  • If applications are locking your files in ways you're unsure of, a restart can free up these files.
  • Save your work, close all applications, and restart your computer.

Disable Preview Pane in File Explorer:

  • If File Explorer’s preview pane is open, it might lock your files for preview, preventing renaming or moving.
  • Open File Explorer, click on the View tab, and make sure the Preview Pane option is turned off.

Check File Permissions:

  • Ensure you have the correct permissions to modify the file.
  • Right-click the file, select Properties, go to the Security tab, and ensure your user account has Full control.

Use Safe Mode:

  • Boot your computer into Safe Mode to perform file operations. Safe Mode loads minimal drivers and may avoid locking files.
  • Restart your computer and press F8 or follow the method specific to your OS to enter Safe Mode.
