I have used the built in Windows antivirus software ever since Microsoft included it with their operating systems and never have installed a 3rd party A/V program since that time.
I have never had a problem with viruses or malware.
Whether or not you want to pay for the McAfee A/V program, that would be an individual choice.
When I buy a new HP notebook, McAfee is the first program I uninstall.
