Hi Paul,
Slightly better but no install.
The message this time was:
"Windows found driver software but encountered an error while attempting to install it."
And:
"The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows95 or later."
Several other things. Yes, my installation has SP1 on it. I have run ccleaner between installs to remove old registry entries. But, the unknow device in Device Manager never disappears, making me think there is something residual that needs to be removed to allow a fresh driver install. In effect I am saying I cannot get all of the old Broadcom components out of my system.
The final thing is, is the Broadcom bluetruth software necessary at all. Can't it be got rid of and another vendor found?

See if this works...
Go to the device manager and click on the bcm20702a0 device needing the driver.
Click on the driver tab.
Click on Update driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder you unzipped.
Make sure the Include subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way.
The ID is supported by the driver because I see it in the driver folder.
There would be no other driver manufacturer to get the driver from.
As a last resort, you can try this much older (2013) version of the driver.
This package contains the Broadcom Bluetooth driver and software for supported models that are running a supported operating system. Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Driver is required to enable Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 devices and is compatible with Broadcom Bluetooth 3.0 and earlier versions.
File name: sp61617.exe

Hi Paul,
Yes and no. I followed your instruction without uninstalling the bluetooth software, and the message was
"The best software driver is already installed".
I took out the bluetooth software, and then attempted to reinstall following your instruction, and got the original instruction, that Windows found driver software but encountered an error... etc
It seems like some interference of residual parts to me, as the Bluetooth did go in, but there was still an exclamation mark on an unknown device just under it. Then on every reboot Windows just keeps trying to find a driver for something unknown.
If I knew how to look for it, I would attempt to remove all of the old broadcom remnants before an attempted reinstall.

Hi:
If the bcm20702a0 is gone, the unknown device may be something else.
Please post the hardware ID for it.
To find the hardware ID, click on the unknown device and then click on the details tab at the top of the unknown device window.
Now you will see a Property drop down list and it will be set to Device description.
Drop down on that list and select the 2nd item (hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters that you see in the window.

Paul,
I have solved it.
I firstly uninstalled another bluetooth program called Blue Soleil, which is associated with an car system diagnosis program called OBDwiz, and ran ccleaner. However that may have been a coincidence.
Next, I uninstalled the unidentified device in device manager, but ran ccleaner immediately afterwards prior to a reboot.
At reboot, four components of the Broadcom bluetooth radios automatically installed, which now shows as Broadcom 20702 Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter, and Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.
Thanks your help and patience, I appreciate it.
