Hello HP Support Team,
My external hard drive was working properly on my HP laptop and was showing up in Windows. I was able to access my files. However, suddenly the hard drive stopped appearing in File Explorer.
I have restarted my laptop, but the hard drive is still not showing.
Please help me troubleshoot this issue and recover access to my hard drive.
Thank you.

Hi @sanwariyatech,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
We understand that the external hard drive was previously accessible but has stopped appearing in File Explorer.
Before proceeding, please confirm:
- The complete model or product number of the HP laptop
- The make and model of the external hard drive
- Whether the drive has its own power adapter
- Whether the drive powers on, spins, or shows an activity light
- Whether Windows makes a connection sound when the drive is connected
- Whether the drive appears in Device Manager or Disk Management
- Whether you tested another USB cable, USB port, or computer
Please try these steps:
- Disconnect the external drive and all other nonessential USB devices.
- Turn off the laptop and disconnect the AC adapter.
- Press and hold the Power button for approximately 20 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the laptop.
- Connect the external drive directly to another USB port without using a hub or docking station.
- If possible, test another compatible USB cable.
A power reset clears temporary system memory and forces Windows to scan the hardware again.
Next, open Device Manager and check Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices. If the external drive appears with a warning symbol, right-click it, select Update driver, and then select Search automatically for drivers. Also install available updates under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, and restart the laptop.
Then, right-click Start and open Disk Management. Check whether the external drive appears there.
Important: If the drive appears as Not initialized, Unallocated, RAW, or asks to be formatted, do not initialize, repartition, or format it if the files are important. Those actions can affect data recovery.
You can follow the USB troubleshooting steps here: HP PCs - Troubleshooting USB connections (Windows) | HP® Support
HP Support can help troubleshoot the laptop’s USB connection, but data recovery and file backup are not included as a standard troubleshooting option. If the drive contains important files and remains inaccessible, contact the drive manufacturer or a qualified data-recovery technician before making changes to the drive.
Please let us know whether the drive appears in Device Manager or Disk Management, and what status is shown.
Take care and have an amazing day!
I'm an HP Employee.
