Hello Jady123,

Thank you for posting your concern,

If the fingerprint scanner on your HP EliteBook 840 is not working, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Update Drivers:

    • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your fingerprint scanner. Ensure that your laptop's operating system is fully updated as well.
  2. Check Device Manager:

    • Open 'Device Manager' on your laptop.
    • Look for "Biometric devices" and see if the fingerprint scanner is listed.
    • Right-click on the fingerprint device and choose "Update driver" to check for any available updates.
    • If you see an error icon, it may indicate a driver issue that needs addressing.
  3. Reinstall the Fingerprint Software:

    • Uninstall the current fingerprint software or driver from your laptop.
    • Restart your laptop, and then reinstall the latest version of the software from the HP website.
  4. Enable Fingerprint Logon:

    • Go to 'Settings' > 'Accounts' > 'Sign-in options'.
    • Under 'Fingerprint', set up a new fingerprint if prompted, or ensure it’s enabled.
  5. HP Client Security Manager:

    • If your EliteBook uses HP Client Security Manager, ensure it’s updated, as this software often manages the fingerprint functionality.
  6. BIOS Update:

    • Occasionally, a BIOS update may be needed for compatibility with newer components or drivers. Check the HP website for any BIOS updates and follow instructions carefully to update.
  7. Hardware Check:

    • Ensure the fingerprint reader is clean and free of any debris or dirt that might be preventing proper function.
    • If possible, perform a hardware diagnostic through HP’s built-in diagnostic tools.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to HP support for further assistance, as there could be a hardware fault or more specific issue needing attention.
