Hi:

Your PC does not meet Microsoft's W11 hardware requirements for more reasons than not having a TPM 2.0 chip.

Your PC's  i3-3220 processor falls 5 Intel Core processor generations short.

The processor needs to be an Intel 8th gen or newer, and there is no way you can upgrade your PC to meet those requirements.

If you are interested in installing W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2.

You have to use the version of the Rufus utility that I zipped up and attached in the discussion (v3.18).

If the in-place upgrade fails, you should be able to clean install W11 using the bootable W11 installation flash drive you made with Rufus.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I have a number of questions before I attempt the in-place upgrade from W10 to W11:

1. Why do I answer 'not right now' to the 'get updates, drivers and optional features' question?

2. As LoopyLou asked 'how do I install the September/October Windows version' each year?

3. I currently sign in to W10 without my password (sole PC user, so minimal security risk). I have forgotten said password. Will I need it at any stage? If so, how can I find/recover it (if it is even possible)?

Thanks for your help.

You're very welcome, Kevin.

You answer 'Not right now' so W11 does not update the installation file to check for W11 hardware requirements which defeats the purpose of using the Rufus tool.

If you are not using a password now then you shouldn't need it later, but I can't guarantee it because I have never come across that kind of issue.

I would not be able to help you with any password recovery, etc. issues.

I have a password and I don't forget it, and also set a password hint that would make me remember it, and on some PC's, I have no password at all.

If the in-place upgrade works, then it should still work the same way without the need for a password.

Another thing I have done on PC's where I have a password set was to create a 'Visitor' user account with administrative rights and no password so that in the event of my death or inability to access the PC, someone else can get into it, and clean install Windows and have a perfectly good PC to use in the future.

Each September/October when Microsoft releases the new W11 build, you make the bootable Rufus installer with the new ISO file... the next one being W11 23H2.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks again Paul.

I'm somewhat nervous about such a significant change, so your advice and explanations are much appreciated.

Thanks for your speedy reply once again.
