how to recover database files for Memos and Calendar of the Palm OS Desktop

I need help with the Palm OS Desktop application I have been running on my PCs for years.  I no longer use any Palm handheld device, but I have been using the Desktop application to keep memos and other information.  The Palm OS I have, Version 6.2.2 by Access, has some idiosyncrasies, which cause it to stop reading my data files properly or not at all.  This happened today when my PC shut down improperly. 

I am looking for help from someone with the Palm OS Desktop experience. 

The specifics of the problem I encountered are as follows.  My windows pc shut down improperly yesterday.  When I turned it on again and opened the Palm OS Desktop, there were no calendar or  memo entries.  I got the message and a similar one for the calendar, indicating that the application failed to open the Memos and the Calendar databases, and that the original database files were renamed memopad.001.dat and datebook.001.dat.  New empty database files were created in the folders MemoPad and DateBook, respectively.

After saving a copy of the original database files, memopad.001.dat [size 981K] and datebook.001.dat [size 2,499K],  I renamed them memopad.dat and datebook.dat -- having first deleted the newly created memopad.dat and datebook.dat files.  I was still unable to see any of the lost data.

My  folders MemoPad and DateBook each contain a UiPrefs.dat file [size 1K], which seems to be updated every time I open and close the Desktop.  I am not sure if I need to modify this file.  I don't even know how to read its contents.   I wonder if that is the key to the Desktop application opening the original database files.

Any suggestions on how to access my database files would be greatly appreciated.
