HP Spectre x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-eu0000 (7K633AV)

My computer keeps displaying pop ups to clean up junk files with iolo system mechanic, and it's an HP Partner but i don't have it on my computer. When i click "resolve now" it takes me to a payment page but I didn't purchase the software. I've even scanned my computer to see if there was any adware/malware on my computer using Malwarebytes, but there was no viruses found. I'm kinda annoyed and skeptical of this program. I doubt HP is partnered with iolo. What should I do?Screenshot 2025-07-07 123229.png

Hi @BitsNDiodes,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Managing Unwanted Pop-Ups on HP Spectre x360!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Installed Applications:

  • Navigate to your computer’s settings and check the list of installed applications. Sometimes trial versions of software might be pre-installed.
  • If iolo System Mechanic or any related software is listed, you can uninstall it from there.

Pop-up Settings and Ad Blockers:

  • Adjust browser settings to block pop-ups, which can help prevent unwanted advertisements and notifications.
  • Consider installing a reputable ad blocker extension in your web browser to reduce unwanted pop-ups.

Review Startup Programs:

  • Check the Task Manager under "Startup" to see if any application related to iolo System Mechanic is set to run during startup. If present, disable it.

Windows Notification Settings:

  • Sometimes notifications or pop-ups can be generated from Windows itself if certain options are enabled. Go to Notifications & Actions under Windows settings and disable notifications for applications you don’t use.

HP Support Assistant:

  • Utilize HP Support Assistant to check for software or driver updates and ensure your system isn't recommending unnecessary apps.

I hope this helps.

The weird thing is that I couldn’t find any software called iolo system mechanic. I also couldn’t find any viruses with Malwarebytes.

Hi @BitsNDiodes,

Thank you for the update. I understand how annoying and suspicious this is, you’re right to be cautious! Let’s clear this up together.

First, a quick fact check:
HP sometimes does have partnerships with third-party software like iolo System Mechanic, but it’s usually optional trialware, it should never pop up repeatedly asking for payment if you didn’t install it yourself. So what you’re seeing might actually be a browser ad, notification spam, or a leftover task from a preloaded version.

Here’s exactly what you should do next:

Double-check for hidden remnants

Open Task Manager → Startup tab, look for anything named iolo, System Mechanic, or anything unfamiliar. If found, right-click and Disable.

Open Settings → Apps → Installed Apps, sort by Install Date or Publisher, look for any iolo-related apps, toolbars, or PC cleaners. If found, uninstall.

Check your browser notifications

Many scam pop-ups today come from websites you accidentally allowed to send notifications.

Open your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.) → Settings → Privacy → Site Settings → Notifications.

Remove or block any suspicious sites you don’t recognize (anything that’s not Gmail, trusted news, etc.).

Clear your browser

Do a quick cleanup:

Clear cookies and cache.

Run a full scan with Windows Security → Full Scan, just in case something slipped past Malwarebytes.

Stop spammy scheduled tasks (advanced)

Sometimes junkware leaves behind tasks.

Open Task Scheduler → Task Scheduler Library → look for tasks with suspicious names (iolo, mechanic, PC cleaner). Right-click and Disable/Delete.

Do not click “Resolve Now”

Since this keeps redirecting you to a payment page, ignore it, don’t share any payment details.

I hope this helps.
