how do I type various symbols from the number keys on the keyboard (e.g. hash tag (no. 3 key - when I capitalise I get a pound sign), at sign (No. 2 key I get a quotation mark), backslash key I get a hashtag instead of a backslash, etc) / Is there a list somewhere????

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

If your keyboard has more than one symbol on the number 2 key, press Ctrl + Shift + 2 to type the at a sign. If the at sign is found on the letter Q key, press and hold the ALT GR key, and then press Q to type the at a sign.

Also, you can Reset keyboard settings. Open Control Panel > Language. Select your default language. If you have multiple languages enabled, move another language to the top of the list, to make it the primary language – and then again move your existing preferred language back to the top of the list. Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
