The software was perhaps a Trial Version.

Trial software is very common.

Yes, after the trial period, you have to purchase the software to continue using it.

If you own your Office Software and it was ever registered with Microsoft -- for example, at first use -- Microsoft has a record of the registration.

Regardless,

Ask Microsoft to help you.

Microsoft owns and controls Microsoft Office software.

Things that are Microsoft / Office Software

Microsoft 365 / all Microsoft Office products are licensed and controlled by Microsoft.

We can help to the extent of providing information to help you understand your options.

If the product / computer is in Warranty and nothing else works, try contacting HP Support

Installation and License Key Options

Some of the ways to “get” Office Software:

  1. Trial Software that comes with the computer.

An "offer" to try the software, in other words.  The license is NOT included in Trial offers.

  1. Purchase Microsoft Office when you purchase your computer

Look for your license key with your purchase paperwork.

  1. Receive a “free one year subscription to Office 365 when you purchase the computer (quite rare).

If you have trouble with this exact type of “installed” Office before it has expired,

Contact HP Support for recovery options.

  1. Purchase Office separately from Microsoft or other merchant.
