Well, Short DST just means the short version of a Drive Self Test, so there is no such thing as a Short DST drive to purchase.
An HDD drive is the original type mechanical drive your notebook came with.
If you prefer to save money and go with what the laptop originally came with, I prefer Western Digital Red or Purple hard drives and would look for one in the 1 TB size. That will be more cost effective than the original sized 500 GB drive.
If you want to upgrade your speed, go for an SSD. Most any brand will be faster than your HDD type of drive.
SSD is Flash based, no moving parts. They are faster but cost more. For those, I personally like Crucial MX 200 or Samsung Evo 850.
I don't know what part of the country you are in, so I would not know where to send you online. You will have to do some homework on that yourself.
In the USA, I shop for my electronics mostly from Amazon or Newegg, because of the service I get if something is sent to me bad.
Hope that helps.

Hello tristan510
Short test failure will also generate a code to look up.
Overall, it means the drive is failing for whatever reason.
You should back up your important files. If you have not done so, create your HP Recovery Media. You will need this to install Windows to a new drive, if you want the laptop to be as it was when you first purchased it.

When you replace the drive, you will have to use one the same size or larger than the original, if reinstalling with the HP Recovery Media.
You can also use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool for installing a clean copy of Windows 8.1, then download and install the drivers from the HP website.

An SSD would make the system run much faster and is the most effective upgrade you can do.
The Maintenance Manual explains how to replace the hard drive.

Also know that if you have never worked on a laptop, and it sounds like you havent, accessing the hard drive on your model is not the easiest thing to do. You have to take the whole top off with keyboard to access the drive.
I gave you the link to the manual above. Go to page 81 for that info.

If you dont know what you're doing, It might pay you to take it to a shop for the repair.
Good luck.
