printer defaults to asking to use Tray 1, which is the upper, smaller tray. Can you rename the lower larger tray to Tray 1?     My MacOS Sonoma 14.0 is  set  correctly to Choose tray 1

Hi @William-9800-__,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

You can't directly rename trays on the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw printer; however, you can change the default tray settings through the printer's control panel or the web interface to make the larger tray the default. Here’s how to adjust the settings.

Through the Printer Control Panel

Access the Menu:

  • On the printer's control panel, press the Home button.

Navigate to Paper Setup:

  • Select Setup (gear icon).
  • Choose Paper Setup or Paper Handling.

Set Default Tray:

  • Find and select the option for Tray Settings or Tray Configuration.
  • Set the larger tray (usually Tray 2) as the default tray.

Save Settings:

  • Confirm and save the settings.

Through the Web Interface

Find the Printer’s IP Address:

  • Print a configuration page from the printer’s control panel to find its IP address.

Access the Printer’s Web Interface:

  • Enter the IP address into a web browser to access the printer’s web interface.

Log In:

  • Log in with the administrator credentials. (Default credentials might be admin/admin if not changed.)

Navigate to Paper Management:

  • Go to Paper or Tray Management settings.

Change Default Tray:

  • Set the larger tray as the default tray for printing.

Save Settings:

  • Apply and save the changes.

After making these changes, your printer should default to using the larger tray for printing tasks. If you still encounter issues, ensure that the paper sizes and types in both trays are configured correctly and that the correct paper is loaded in the trays.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
