Hi @Biluta
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query.
The SM Bus Controller handles communication between system hardware components, an uninstalled or corrupted driver causes Windows to mark the device with a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager (often categorized under Other devices instead of System devices) or throw a "Cannot Install this Hardware" error. This disruption frequently prevents connected input devices, such as the Synaptics TouchPad, from functioning properly.
I would request you to please share me the Product number, Meanwhile I would request you to please follow the below steps.
Update the Driver via Device Manager
- Ensure Internet Connectivity: Make sure your computer is connected to an active internet network.
- Open Device Manager: In the Windows search bar, type and open Device Manager.
- Display Hidden Devices: Click View in the top menu, then select Show hidden devices.
- Locate the SM Bus Controller: Click the arrow to expand System devices (or check under Other devices) and right-click SM Bus Controller.
- Note: If you do not see SM Bus Controller listed, restart your laptop and repeat these steps.
- Update Driver: Select Update driver. Windows will automatically search for and attempt to install the correct driver.
Manually Install Official Chipset Drivers
If the automatic update fails, you can download and install the chipset drivers directly from the component manufacturer:
- Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool: Search for and open dxdiag in Windows.
- Identify Your Chipset: Select the Display tab and locate your chipset details in the Device section.
- Visit Manufacturer Download Page: Search for the full name of your chipset to locate the official download portal (such as Intel Chipsets, AMD Support, or NVIDIA Driver Downloads).
- Install the Driver: Download the compatible chipset driver package and follow the installation instructions provided by HP.

Take care and have an amazing day!
