Hi @mattz1986,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error code 0x80070002 is a common Windows update error that typically indicates a problem with the Windows Update service or a corrupt system file. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve this error on your Victus By HP gaming laptop.
Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that your laptop is connected to the internet. Sometimes, a poor or unstable internet connection can cause update errors.
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can automatically find and fix problems with Windows Update. Here's how to use it:
- Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
- Go to "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot."
- Click on "Windows Update" and then click "Run the troubleshooter."
Clear Windows Update Cache: Sometimes, corrupted Windows Update cache files can cause this error. You can clear the Windows Update cache as follows:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator. To do this, search for "cmd" in the Start menu, right-click on "Command Prompt," and select "Run as administrator."
- Type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
- After stopping these services, you'll need to rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders. To do this, run the following commands:
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
- Finally, restart the services you stopped earlier by running these commands:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Check for Corrupt System Files: It's possible that corrupt system files are causing the update error. You can use the built-in System File Checker (SFC) tool to scan and repair these files:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
- Let the scan complete, and follow any instructions it provides.
Perform a Clean Boot: Sometimes, third-party software or services can interfere with Windows updates. You can perform a clean boot to start Windows with only essential services and drivers, then try updating again.
Manually Download and Install the Update: If none of the above steps work, you can manually download the update from the official Microsoft website and install it.
Check for Disk Errors: Disk errors can also cause update problems. You can check and repair disk errors using the built-in Check Disk utility:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type chkdsk /f and press Enter.
- You may need to restart your computer to allow the tool to check and repair your disk.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
