Everything - absolutely everything I do with this computer is extremely slow. Whether it's opening an app, working in Word Processor, or even using programs and apps within their respective functions.

I am extremely disappointed with this computer. I have a 5-year old Acer that performs better than this. I am looking into returning it within my warranty.

Before I take this ultimate step, is there anything I can do to resolve this problem or is this computer simply poorly designed?

Greetings @astrid111,

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are facing a performance issue with your computer, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

May I know the exact product number of your computer? Click here. Please do not share the serial number of your computer.

Have you run a diagnostics on your computer?

May I know the operating system installed on your computer?

Have you made any hardware changes on your computer?

Have you tried to update all the drivers using HP Support Assistant?

Recommend you run HP Support Assistant on your computer to update all the drivers on your computer.

Refer to this HP Article for assistance in using HPSA to update the drivers.

Once all the drivers are updated, especially BIOS and chipset.

Make sure all the Windows updates are installed.

Shut down your computer.

Wait for a minute.

Turn the computer On and keep tapping F2 repeatedly on startup to enter system diagnostics. Click here

Run a system test on your computer to make sure all the components are working fine.

If any of the tests fail, please contact our phone support team to check on the service options available for your computer.

If all the tests pass, try the steps suggested in this HP Guided troubleshooter.

Let me know if this helped.

You wrote that you have a "new" computer.

The first time that a "fresh" Windows 10 system connects to the Internet, it launches Windows Update, as a "background" task.

This process consumes resources on your computer:

* CPU (but with dual-core or quad-core processors, you may not notice),

* RAM (leaving less RAM for you to use in the "foreground"),

* network (downloading as fast as your ISP allows you to download, thus monopolizing your connection, and making it very slow for you to access web-pages),

* disk-drive (keeps it 100% busy receiving updates, and then applying the updates).

Launch Windows Update, to see what it is doing.  Let it complete. Reboot. Your updated computer should be much faster.

I searched among the forums here and ended up following this advice to a fellow HP notebook owner.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/HP-Pavilion-Windows-10-REALLY-SLOW/td-p/53877...

and this

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03340676

This computer is brand new so I have installed very few new software. The only ones I can list that I see could take up more memory is Skype, Spotify, Instagram (??), Netflix. But I see on my memory 63% of my CPU Memory is currently used up even with such few applications installed.

The computer is still pretty slow even though I followed and applied the steps in the first article and investigated to the best of my ability to see all the processes running in the background - there are none that I see that I can feel safe simply disabling.

So the problem is still there. I need more specific help. Consider that this is a brand new computer and I am a person who suddenly finds that it is running slow. It was sold to me like this - there is not enough I have done to it to cause this. What would you tell this person to do?

I am afraid to start transferring files from my old computer to this new one as I feel adding more files will cause it to run even more slowly.

Thanks for your help!

My product number is: 1KS87UA#ABA

My OS is: BIOS : F.04-07/12/2017 - Windows 10 Home

I have not made any hardware changes of my notebook.

All my drivers are new as can be as this computer is recently purchased.

WIndows update is up to date - so that is not the problem.

Thank you for the other things you listed that may affect performance.

I'm still frustrated that I invested over 800$ in a product that isn't letting me do my work - this is very disappointing.

Your computer: https://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c05567141#AbT0

HP ENVY x360 - 15m-bq021dx
AMD Quad-Core FX™ 9800P APU (2.7 GHz base frequency, up to 3.6 GHz burst frequency, 2 MB cache)
8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)
1 TB 7200 rpm SATA

should not be "slow" at all:

* 4 CPUs, each at 2.7 Ghz

* 8 GB of the fastest RAM that is available

* 7200 RPM disk-drive -- only thing faster would be a SSD (Solid State Device).

So, measure, measure, measure.

Use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to launch the Windows Task Manager.

Click to its 'Performance' tab, to see what percentages of the CPU / RAM / disk-drive / network are being used.

Near the bottom of this window, click 'Resource Monitor', and click its 'Performance' tab, and "drill-down" to see which processes are consuming the most CPU, which processes are using the most RAM, which processes are doing the most disk input/output, and which processes are accessing the network.

Tell us what you see.

Also, power-off your computer.

Power-on your computer, and immediately launch the HP Hardware Diagnostics.

Run both the "short" (a few minutes) and the "long" (many minutes) tests of the disk-drive.

Tell us what it reports -- "pass" or "fail".

Your computer has a few major components:

* processor, which may have 2 or 4 or even 8 processing-units -- compare to the engine in your automobile;

* RAM -- compare to a table-top -- only the books from your library that you have open, currently on the table, will occupy some of the table-top space, no matter how many hundreds of books you have on the shelves of your library (or, equivalently, stored on your disk-drive);

* disk-drive -- any new computer has enough "shelves" to store tens of thousands of books.

So, adding more books to your library does not automatically put the books onto your table-top;

adding more files to your disk-drive does not automatically put the files into your RAM.

So, I'm not sure what you mean by "CPU Memory".

It's a "**bleep**-hybrid" of two major components of your computer ?!

But, if your computer is showing the processor at "63%", then there is some program intensively using your processor.

If your computer is showing the RAM at "63%", it depends on the amount of RAM.

If your computer has only 2 GB of RAM, then Windows 10, at "idle", will consume 63% of that 2GB.

If your computer has 4 GB of RAM, then consuming 63% of it means that some program(s) are running, and each program is using a significant amount of RAM.

What are all the programs running in your task manager? Does your disk has enough space? Can you check what processes are occupying the RAM and CPU?

I have this same computer which I bought last year , I bought it as it had been 6-7 years with my last HP that I use daily for work in and out of my truck . Have not been happy since the day I bought it , I think it was around 1200cad and use it to watch Netflix sometime , it’s so slow it can barely open Skype .
This has a 60 day return policy on it but unfortunately for me I was in the bush working and missed the return date.
Since then I have replaced the battery and continued to use 7 year old Pavilon dv6 which shuts down some times if it overheats but still outperforms this new computer .
