@tinamiller, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding webcam issue!
If your webcam light turns on but the screen remains black, it could be due to a software, driver, or privacy setting issue. Let’s walk through some steps to get your camera working again:
Check Camera Privacy Settings
Windows may be blocking access to the camera.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera
- Make sure Camera access for this device is turned On
- Ensure Allow apps to access your camera is also On
- Scroll down and enable access for the apps you want to use (e.g., Zoom, Teams)
Test the Camera in the Camera App
- Press Windows + S, type Camera, and open the Camera app
- If the screen is still black, proceed to the next steps
Update or Reinstall the Camera Driver
- Press Windows + X > Device Manager
- Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras
- Right-click your webcam > Update driver
- Choose Search automatically for drivers
If that doesn’t help:
- Right-click the webcam > Uninstall device
- Restart your laptop - Windows will reinstall the driver automatically
Check for HP Software Updates
Use HP Support Assistant to check for updates:
- Download or open HP Support Assistant - HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
- Go to Updates and install any available camera or BIOS updates
BIOS Settings (Advanced)
Sometimes the camera can be disabled in BIOS:
- Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS
- Look for Device Configuration or Security > I/O Port Access
- Ensure the Webcam is enabled
Try in Safe Mode or Another App
Boot into Safe Mode and test the camera. If it works there, a third-party app or driver might be interfering.
